Miley Cyrus revealed in a new interview that she wasn’t allowed to perform Hannah Montana songs after leaving Disney.
Cyrus explained on Spotify’s The Ringer podcast, “After I left Disney, I wasn’t allowed to perform any of the Hannah Montana music. It’s not like I wanted to, I mean, performing ‘The Best Of Both Worlds’ between ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ wouldn’t have really made sense. It was still sad knowing those songs have my voice, my face, and I wasn’t allowed to sing them.”
The “Hannah Montana” series ran on Disney Channel from 2006 to 2011, with Cyrus starring as Miley Stewart, who lived a double life as pop star Hannah Montana. Cyrus performed dozens of Hannah Montana songs, including the theme “The Best of Both Worlds.”
Cyrus is now allowed to perform Hannah Montana songs. The rule changed when she became a Disney Legend last year at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.
“After being inducted as a Disney Legend, I was given permission to perform those songs in the future, which is pretty cool,” she said.
Cyrus has had a successful music career following her debut as Hannah Montana. Her first album, “Meet Miley Cyrus,” was sold as a double album with the “Hannah Montana” season 2 soundtrack. Her 2009 hit “Party in the U.S.A.” became one of the best-selling singles of all time. Her ninth studio album, “Something Beautiful,” was released last month. A musical film of the same name was released on June 6.
