Producer of ‘Sinners’ Says Costumes Were Originally Intended for Marvel’s ‘Blade’ Reboot

In a recent interview, producer Sev Ohanian of “Sinners” said that several costumes used for the film were purchased from Marvel after the “Blade” reboot postponed shooting.

First announced in 2019, “Blade” was supposed to be a reboot of the original “Blade” trilogy of films starring Wesley Snipes. As part of the film’s initial announcement at San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that the reboot would star Mahershala Ali and premiere sometime in 2023. Since the initial announcement, however, the film has been continuously pushed back due to production struggles.

The issues began when the movie’s first director departed the project in September 2022 with no explanation. The director’s departure put production on hold, and a new director was chosen. Following more delays after the 2023 Writers Guild of America strikes, the second director also stepped down from the position in 2024 and caused the premiere date to slide from February 2025 to November 2025.

As we reported earlier this year, Disney has now completely removed “Blade” from the Marvel release calendar. According to the latest reports, the upcoming “Blade” film may have been completely scrapped at this point.

In a new article from Variety, producer Sev Ohanian revealed an interesting Marvel connection in the recent film “Sinners.” According to Ohanian, several of the costumes worn in the film were purchased from Marvel, and that they were originally intended for the “Blade” reboot film.

“Sinners” is a 2025 horror film that premiered on April 18. As described by Variety, “An entirely original horror film released to a sea of IP fare, the film went on to gross a staggering $364 million worldwide. It is currently the eighth highest-grossing film of 2025 and the only title in the top 10 not based on preexisting IP.”

Ohanian describes how “Blade” was initially going to include scenes set in the past, so Marvel had already acquired a huge number of period-appropriate costumes when production on the movie was postponed. Since “Sinners” is set in 1932, it was possible for the costumes to be repurposed:

[Costume designer] Ruth Carter was working on the Blade movie that ended up not shooting. At one point that movie was going to deal with, and she’s talked about this before, but at one point that film was going to deal with the past around the same era as ‘Sinners.’ She happened to have a warehouse full of period-appropriate clothes, and it was like, ‘Yo, we got to shoot this movie like tomorrow.’ And Marvel was generous enough and kind enough to let us basically purchase it at price.

Ohanian later goes on to specify that the costumes purchased from Marvel were mostly used to dress background actors in various “Sinners” scenes, while most of the main characters wore original outfits.

Following rumors of the film getting cancelled, Mahershala Ali said in an interview that he would still love to star in “Blade.” During the premiere of “Jurassic World Rebirth,” he told Variety, “Call Marvel. I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready.” He later added in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “You know, I’m just taking it a day at a time. I’m doing the best work I can. […] I would love for Blade to happen. We’ll see, I don’t know where Marvel is at right now.”

So far, Ali’s only opportunity to portray Blade, a.k.a. Eric Brooks, was an uncredited voice-only cameo at the end of 2021 Marvel film “The Eternals.”
