Filmed Original Broadway Production of Hamilton to Get Theatrical Release by Disney

Five years after its streaming debut on Disney+, the filmed version of Hamilton, featuring most of the original Broadway cast, will get a theatrical release by Walt Disney Studios.

Hamilton to Get Theatrical Release

The news was first announced on the Tuesday, August 5 episode of The Tonight Show, by creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda.

“I have an announcement!” Miranda said. “So, tomorrow is the 10-year anniversary of Hamilton, and we’ve been celebrating all year. But we have one more way to celebrate. We filmed most of the original cast performing in Hamilton in 2016, and we always wanted to release it theatrically, but then the pandemic hit, and so we decided to release it on streaming so that everyone could see it at home whenever they wanted. But, September 5, you will be able to see Hamilton in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico.”

The announcement was followed by a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Walt Disney Studios confirming the announcement of the film’s release on September 5, 2025, with the news that tickets go on sale today, August 6.

Hamilton made its streaming debut on Disney+ on July 3, 2020, ahead of its previously announced theatrical release set for 2021. A sing-along version was streamed on Disney+ in 2023 for Independence Day. The version is a “pro shot” of the stage production, rather than a feature film adaptation.

Hamilton originally debuted in 2015 off-Broadway at the Public Theater and was an instant success. The show won eight Drama Desk Awards that season, including Outstanding Musical. It transferred to Broadway at the Richard Rogers Theatre later that year, in August. Hamilton then won a record-breaking 16 nominations and 11 awards at the 70th Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show continues to run on Broadway, on the West End in London, and on tour across the U.S., the U.K., and Ireland.
