Doctor Who and House of the Dragon star Matt Smith has been cast as a villain in Star Wars: Starfighter.

The report comes from Deadline, who states director Shawn Levy met with several actors for this key role and executives made the decision to cast Smith.

Smith starred as the 11th Doctor in Doctor Who from 2010 to 2013. His other big roles include Prince Philip in The Crown and currently Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon.

Lucasfilm announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan that Ryan Gosling would star in Star Wars: Starfighter. Mia Goth’s casting was later announced.

Jonathan Tropper wrote the film’s script. Production will begin this fall. Story details are scarce but Starfighter will be set five years after The Rise of Skywalker (2019), which was the last Star Wars film in theaters.

One month before Starfighter is released on May 28, 2027, Star Wars: A New Hope will return to theaters for its 50th anniversary.

The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released first, however, on May 22, 2026. Also in development is a Star Wars sequel helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, with Daisy Ridley returning as Rey, set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. James Mangold will direct a film about the origins of the Force. Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni is leading a film set between The Mandalorian and The Force AwakensSimon Kinberg is developing a new Star Wars trilogy.
