The Muppet Show Revival Special Announced for Disney+, Guest Star Revealed

Disney has now confirmed a “revival special” of The Muppet Show that will air in 2026 on Disney+.

According to a new article by Variety, Disney has announced a special event titled The Muppet Show that is set to air on Disney+.

Rather than being a full series revivial, this announcement is only for a single special. However, Variety notes that it “could serve as a backdoor pilot that would help launch a new iteration of the iconic series.”

The special is set to premiere in 2026 to coincide with the original show’s 50th anniversary. The original series The Muppet Show was created by Jim Henson and ran from 1976 to 1981. In the new special, “the Muppets will return to the Muppet Theatre to produce a variety show.”

Sabrina Carpenter has also been confirmed to be a guest star.

Several classic Muppet performers will be returning for the special:

Veteran Muppet performers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman and Matt Vogel will perform the majority of the Muppet characters in the special, supported by a team of additional performers. Goelz, who has performed with The Muppets for over 50 years, was one of the performers on the original “The Muppet Show” and originated the characters Gonzo and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, among others.

The writer and executive producer is Albertina Rizzo, while the director is Alex Timbers, who is known for directing Broadway musicals. Carpenter is also listed as an executive producer. As previously rumored, other executive producers include Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver and Alex McAtee of Point Grey Pictures. It is being produced by 20th Television, Disney Branded Television, The Muppets Studio, and Point Grey.

The Muppets

This is the newest project by Disney to star the Muppets since The Muppets Mayhem. The Disney+ series from 2023 followed Nora, a young music executive, as she helped The Electric Mayhem record their first album. The show was cancelled after just one season, but gained positive reviews from fans and critics.

Other Muppets projects helmed by Disney have included Muppets Haunted Mansion in 2021, a short-lived series in 2020 called Muppets Now, and an ABC series titled The Muppets that was also cancelled after a single season. The last Muppet-focused film to be released in theaters was Muppets Most Wanted in 2014, which was a sequel to The Muppets from 2011.
