NBCUniversal’s latest plan for Universal Studios Hollywood suggests that WaterWorld will be replaced by a new attraction.
Is WaterWorld Being Replaced?
The “Evolution Plan” — Project No. TR068565 with Los Angeles County — is continually updated by NBCUniversal with new concepts for Universal Studios Hollywood and the surrounding Universal City. The latest filing, shared by Theme Park Insider, includes several updates to the theme park.
T-3 on the concept map is the current site of the WaterWorld theater. It’s labeled here as “New Theme Park Attraction W/Food & Beverage Retail.”
The 20-minute stunt show, based on the film of the same name, opened at Universal Studios Hollywood in 1995. Though the film was panned, the show is critically acclaimed and earned a 1996 Thea Award.
Universal has not confirmed the closure of WaterWorld, and it’s possible plans could change.
Other Universal Studios Hollywood Updates
The map also includes new attractions at sites T-2, T-4, T-7, and T-11. These include two spaces on the backlot — likely additions to the Studio Tour promised by Universal when they announced the closure of Fast & Furious: Supercharged.
A “Future Destination Venue” and “New Parking/Tram Maintenance” areas are designated at the end of CityWalk, on a site currently used for Halloween Horror Nights houses.
The other most notable projects are H-1 and H-2, two 500-room hotels. One has been publicly in the works for a while and will replace the current security area. The second hotel has been rumored but not confirmed until now. It’s located behind the Frankenstein parking structure, right next to the track of Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, a new coaster opening next year.
As a result of the first hotel replacing security, a new security plaza will be constructed. This is on the map at P-4 as a new transportation hub, taking over a surface parking lot.
The plan also includes new and expanded studio facilities, like office space and stages.
