Following rumors that they were working with Elon Musk’s The Boring Co. to make an underground transit system, Universal has released documents detailing the bidding process for a potential transportation system that would connect their new Epic Universe park with the rest of Universal Orlando Resort.
Epic Universe Transit System Proposals
Universal’s Shingle Creek Transit & Utility Community Development District opened bids on August 18 for companies “to provide, design, build, operation and maintenance services” for a “point-to-point innovative transportation project.” The agreement would be for 25 years. Bidders must have a minimum bonding capacity of $75 million, at least 7 years in business, and a project of similar size and quality completed within the last 15 years with a minimum cost of $25 million.
Universal asked for “an aggressive but realistic time frame” for the “future-ready” system.
Bidding closed on October 1 but Universal has yet to select a firm. Musk’s company was not named in the documents but it’s possible they submitted a proposal.
District Manager Jennifer Walden told Orlando Business Journal that the district “is reviewing the proposals of various innovative solutions in response to the request for qualifications for a potential transportation project. We appreciate the interest, but it would be premature to discuss details for the potential project during the RFQ review.”
The district’s next meeting is scheduled for January 14 and they might discuss the project then.
Epic Universe is located about three miles from the rest of Universal Orlando Resort with only buses directly connecting them right now.
