Kathryn Hahn In Talks With Disney To Play Mother Gothel In Live-Action ‘Tangled’

Kathryn Hahn is reportedly in discussions with Disney to take on the role of Mother Gothel in the studio’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled.

According to Deadline, Kathryn Hahn is currently talking with Disney to play the main antagonist in Disney’s live-action Tangled.

Mother Gothel is a vain witch who kidnaps Princess Rapunzel to exploit the magical powers of her incredibly long hair to stay young and beautiful forever. She poses as Rapunzel’s loving but overprotective mother in a secluded tower for years

Kathryn Hahn is a prominent actress for Disney, best known as the villainous witch Agatha Harkness in Marvel’s WandaVision and its spinoff Agatha All Along

Live-Action Rapunzel and Flynn Rider Cast

This comes after the official announcement by Disney that Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim have been cast as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider.

Australian actress Teagan Croft is most recognizable for playing Rachel Azarath/Rachel Roth/Raven in Titans, the live-action adaptation of DC’s Teen Titans.

Disney Channel fans will instantly recognize Manheim, who played the lead role of Zed in the four Zombies films, with the latest being released just last year. He also recently appeared in the critically-acclaimed Hollywood Bowl production of Jesus Christ Superstar as Peter and in an Off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors in the starring role of Seymour.

Live-Action ‘Tangled’

The live-action version of Tangled has had a fittingly, well, tangled journey to production. We first reported on the development of a live-action Tangled remake in 2020, ten years after the original film’s release, and it was announced in December 2024 as being in development with The Greatest Showman film director Michael Gracey.

The project was then placed on “indefinite hold” in April 2025 following the disappointing performance of the live-action Snow White film, but resumed production in October 2025 after the blockbuster live-action Lilo & Stitch. Gracey is still attached to direct and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is still writing the script.
