Filmmaker Rian Johnson has responded to comments made by Kathleen Kennedy regarding a former Star Wars trilogy project that Johnson was meant to lead.

Kathleen Kennedy recently stepped down as president of Lucasfilm to return to producing full-time. She is replaced by Lucasfilm general manager Lynwen Brennan and chief creative officer Dave Filoni. In an exit interview with Deadline, Kennedy commented on Rian Johnson and The Last Jedi, citing that his project “Knives Out ate up ‘a huge amount of his time,’ she also claimed he got “a little scared” by the fan backlash to The Last Jedi and decided to step away from the project.”
After the interview was publicized, Johnson took to X to debunk the statement:

After the 2017 franchise, the filmmaker was set to helm another Star Wars trilogy that never made it off the ground. In an interview with Rolling Stones, he said:
Nothing really happened with it, Johnson said. ‘We had a great time working together, and they said, ‘Let’s keep doing it.’ I said, ‘Great!’ I would kick ideas around with Kathy… I went off and made Knives Out, and was off to the races, busy making murder mysteries. It’s the sort of thing if, down the line, there’s an opportunity to do it, or do something else in Star Wars, I would be thrilled. But right now I’m just doing my own stuff, and pretty happy.
While we won’t see the canceled Kylo Ren movie The Hunt for Ben Solo, in 2026, there are several Star Wars projects coming to screens and Disney Parks this year.
