Oversight District Approves $6.7 Million Electrical System Budget Likely for Magic Kingdom Expansion

The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District has approved a $6.7 million budget for an electrical system extension near Magic Kingdom, likely to support the new Disney Villains Land and Cars-themed Piston Peak National Park area.

The $6,750,000 budget for the North Service Area Electrical System was discussed at the January 23 meeting of the board of supervisors. The North Service Area refers to a backstage area behind Magic Kingdom.

An expansion to the Magic Kingdom electrical system would make sense given the two new areas under construction. Though Piston Peak National Park replaces existing infrastructure, it will have two new attractions and require much more electricity than Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. The Disney Villains Land will add space to the park, including two more attractions, plus dining and shopping.

The budget includes $1 million for Reedy Creek Energy Services design/support services, $750,000 for professional services, and $5 million for owner furnished materials, plus a 10% contingency for unforeseen issues. This is still an initial budget and costs are subject to change.

The agenda item refers to a “new customer” but this would actually refer to a new project for Disney, not a different unknown customer.
