RUMOR DEBUNKED: Villains Land Was Already Big and Bold, No Plans Have Changed for Magic Kingdom

Over the last week, you’ve undeniably heard rumors that soon-to-be Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro ordered Imagineers to go “bigger and bolder” on plans for the much-anticipated Villains Land at the Magic Kingdom. We’ve remained silent on the topic in that time, honestly, because we had heard nothing of the sort. However, according to those with knowledge on the subject, no such mandate has been made anytime recently.

The long road to Villains Land’s current iteration (and not the version envisioned for the park in the late 1990s) began at the D23 Expo in 2022, where Walt Disney Imagineering, uncharacteristically, shared very early “blue sky” plans for what the future of Walt Disney World would be. Among the possibilities were lands themed to Moana and Zootopia at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, as well as Coco and Encanto areas beyond Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain. While most of those projects are not coming to life currently at Walt Disney World, one area in the concept art received an ovation Disney wasn’t expecting.

A dark and shadowy mountain range spotted with castle turrets lurking just past the Casa Madrigal harkened a land for Disney’s Villains. Fans were captivated and enthralled, whether they had lived long enough to remember rumors of such a place over 20 years earlier or not. Disney noticed and sent their Imagineers to the drawing board to further chase this dream.

Finally, at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event (the D23 Expo, but with a much harder to remember name) in 2024, Disney Experiences chairman Josh D’Amaro announced on stage that Villains Land was officially coming to the Magic Kingdom. With the announcement came new concept art, which seemed bigger, bolder, and certainly more defined than what we had seen 2 years earlier. Considering their first thoughts had three themed areas out behind Big Thunder Mountain at the Magic Kingdom, these new plans that featured a Villains realm that took up the entire back corner of the park’s expansion seemed to indicate that the scope of the project had grown quite a bit between the blue sky phase and official announcement.

With that being said, I think we have the source of the rumor. It’s clear that plans for Villains Land grew exponentially ahead of the formal announcement in August 2024. However, there have been zero signs that the project has been shaken up since last summer.

The Villains Land is currently in the permitting phase, so there’s little opportunity for buildings to change or for any to be added at the last minute. We should continue to expect two large-scale attractions, as well as multiple shops and restaurants, all making up a land that is the focal point of Walt Disney Imagineering’s efforts to cap off this era of unprecedented “supercharged” expansion. That doesn’t mean we should expect anything short of extraordinary, though.

I want to clarify that the purpose of this article is certainly not to villainize theme park rumors. There is often at least a nugget of truth to these things, something we learned very well over the nearly 19 years we’ve been participating in this community. Rumors are a very healthy and important part of the discourse that I certainly hope will continue, sparking important conversations within our fandom.

The Villains Land at the Magic Kingdom is expected to arrive around 2030, but no exact timeframe has been announced to the public at this time.
