Disney Cancels Live-Action Remake of Animated Classic ‘Robin Hood’

Production on the next photorealistic remake of a Disney animated classic is dead in the water, according to the project’s director.

‘It’s dead, sadly’ – Director Confirms Project Cancellation

According to director Carlos López Estrada, who revealed the news during a recent Reddit “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) thread, the “live-action” photorealistic remake project is effectively canceled.

The film was first announced back in 2020 as a musical release intended for Disney+. In the six years since then, however, there have been no material announcements or official confirmation of the production’s status.

In the top comment of Estrada’s AMA thread, one user inquired about the film specifically, asking for any details. In response, Estrada seems to have confirmed production has ceased on the project.

It’s dead sadly. I say sadly because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it.

Estrada, known for co-directing Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” (2021) and directing “Blindspotting” (2018), had been attached to direct the project, working alongside screenwriter Kari Granlund, who previously worked on the live-action remake of “Lady and the Tramp” (2019) developed as a platform launch release for Disney+.

Although Disney has not publicly commented on the project’s cancellation, the news comes as the studio continues to develop other live-action adaptations of animated titles, including more recent films such as “Moana”, “Tangled”, and “Hercules”.

Disney’s original animated “Robin Hood” was released in 1973 and offered a playful, musical retelling of the English folklore legend using anthropomorphic animals. In the film, Robin Hood and his love interest Maid Marian are portrayed as foxes, while characters such as Little John and Prince John appear as other animal species. The story follows the heroic outlaw who steals from the wealthy ruling class to aid the poor citizens of Nottingham.

Given Estrada’s previous work, do you think the live-action version of Robin Hood could have held some promise? Let us know your thoughts about this news on social media.
