Disney Dream Celebrates 15 Years of Service

Disney Cruise Line’s third ship has officially been sailing for 15 years. The Disney Dream set off on its maiden voyage in January 2011.

The Disney Dream was ordered by Disney Cruise Line in 2007. It was their first ship built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany after the first two ships were built by Italian company Fincantieri.

Steel cutting began in 2009. Construction continued into 2010 and the first float-out was on October 30, 2010.

It was completed and Disney Cruise Line took possession of the ship in December 2010. The ship then crossed the Atlantic to Port Canaveral, where it was christened on January 19, 2011.

The ship’s godmother is Jennifer Hudson, who had previously worked on the Disney Wonder.

The Disney Dream’s maiden voyage began on January 26, 2011.

The Dream originally offered three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas, including Disney’s private island Castaway Cay, from Port Canaveral.

When the Disney Wish launched in 2022, it took over the Dream’s former itineraries. Since then, the Dream has sailed through Europe and out of Miami. It’s currently sailing out of Fort Lauderdale on three- to seven- night sailings before another summer of long voyages in Europe.

The Dream was the first of its titular Dream class, which also includes the Disney Fantasy. The sister ship launched in 2012.

It has a gross tonnage of 13,000 and a maximum capacity of 4,000 passengers. It has 14 passenger decks. On the ship’s bow is Captain Mickey, while Sorcerer Mickey and magical brooms are the stern figures. In the atrium is a statue of Admiral Donald. The interior is Art Deco vs. the Fantasy’s Art Nouveau style.

The Dream introduced the AquaDuck “water coaster”, a version of which has come to every Disney Cruise Line ship. The original is a 765 foot long tube three stories above the top decks of the ship based on Donald Duck and his nephews.

The Dream has a Hercules-inspired concierge lounge and sun deck. The ship’s three rotational dining restaurants are Royal Palace, Enchanted Garden, and Animator’s Palate. The current Broadway-style shows performed in the Walt Disney Theatre are Disney’s Believe, The Golden Mickeys, and Beauty and the Beast.

Bingo and Bluey characters on the Disney Dream

The ship was the first to introduce Bluey and Bingo on domestic Disney Cruise Line sailings earlier this year.

After a child fell overboard and was rescued by her father last year, the Dream installed new railings in front of open portholes on Deck 4. The Fantasy did the same.
