Disney+ Launches Vertical Video ‘Verts’

Disney+ has launched vertical video content a.k.a. “Verts” on their mobile app. Disney announced Verts earlier this year, hoping it would improve daily engagement.

A new Verts icon is in the navigation bar on mobile. Users can click this to enter the vertical video feed and swipe through a stream of scenes from movies and shows on Disney+. From the videos, they can add the content to their Watchlist or jump directly into playback.

In early experiments on Disney+ and since the launch on ESPN in August, Verts has “driven additional engagement,” Disney says. “Much of this can be attributed to our new advanced algorithm that powers the recommendation engine for the experience to ensure that Verts feels uniquely relevant and personalized to each individual user.”

This launch is just the first phase of Verts, which was “built with user utility and scale in mind.” The team is “exploring and experimenting with ways to expand far beyond content discovery.”

Disney said Verts offers “opportunities in the future to add content from creators that reflects our fandoms, plus other storytelling formats, content types, and personalized experiences.”
