Gertie Tail Receives Scrim Band-Aid as Echo Lake Water Level is Lowered

After we reported on a crack in Gertie the Dinosaur’s tail at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the broken tail fell off. Disney attempted to hide the missing piece with a couple of random boxes a few days ago, but it appears work is underway to properly fix the issue.

The scrim on the back of Gertie’s body is visible from a distance. Echo Lake has also been drained to a level where the unpainted part of Gertie is visible above the water level.

Over on the side near the counter window, the scrim covers the hole left by the broken tail. The end of Gertie’s tail is fully visible, sticking out of the ground. The stripe marking where the water level ought to be is visible on both pieces of Gertie.

As visible in the above pictures, the entirety of Echo Lake has been largely drained to patch up one of the last remaining dinosaurs in Walt Disney World.

In mid February, our reporters noticed a deep horizontal crack running along Gertie the Dinosaur’s tail. The spot is normally hidden by landscaping, but with the removal of vegetation due to Florida’s recent freezing temperatures, the structure became fully visible to guests.

Within a few days, the crack had been patched and painted over. But this fix was insufficient, and the crack had reopened by February 27.

Gertie is a life-size dinosaur-shaped building, home to Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction, which remains open and operating normally. The structure is based on Gertie the Dinosaur, a 1914 animated short film by Winsor McCay. Gertie was the first animated dinosaur and one of the first animated characters ever.
