Rust and Scratches Already Showing on Universal Studios Hollywood’s Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift

Crews are hard at work constructing the Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift rollercoaster at Universal Studios Hollywood. But on a recent visit, we noticed the beams are already taking a beating with damage and rust.

Beam Damage

During our visit yesterday, March 2, we noticed damage throughout the visible coaster beams. This included rusted bolts at the base of one of the beams. This one seen above also has visible paint damage already as well.

Then we noticed more scratches and surface damage on other beams nearby. Though the bolts on the beam shown above are faring better than the previous one.

Scratches are abundant on many of the beams we could see from the ground in various parts of the coaster frame.

Some of the surface damage also appears to reveal either a rust-colored base or the development of rust on the beams.

It is not abnormal for the steel parts of a roller coaster to have surface rust and scratches during construction, as metal components are often stored outside for months. This is expected to be cleaned and removed before corrosion-resistant coatings are applied.

As of right now, Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift is set to open this summer.
