Walt Disney Imagineering Hiring AI Executive to Build New Platform That Changes How They Create

Walt Disney Imagineering has posted a job listing for an artificial intelligence (AI) platform engineering executive to lead the building of an “AI-first platform that will fundamentally change how Imagineering creates.”

This comes right after OpenAI announced the shutdown of Sora despite a $1 billion deal with Disney.

Imagineering Hiring for AI Platform Creation

Walt Disney Imagineering

Here’s the job summary for Executive – AI Platform Engineering:

Walt Disney Imagineering’s Technology Studio develops the software platforms and tools that power how Imagineers design and deliver world-class experiences. We are seeking an Executive, AI Platform Engineering to lead a transformative initiative: building the AI-first platform that will fundamentally change how Imagineering creates.

In this role, you will own two critical mandates. First, you will architect and deliver the AI platform that transforms Imagineering’s design and delivery workflows—bringing modern AI capabilities directly into the hands of Imagineers. Second, you will lead the adoption of AI-powered developer infrastructure across WDI’s software teams, radically improving engineering velocity and quality. You will inherit an existing engineering team while building out new capabilities, partnering closely with Disney Research and Advanced Development to bridge cutting-edge research with production-ready systems. The ideal candidate is a visionary builder who has scaled AI platforms before, brings an entrepreneurial mindset, and can rally teams around a new paradigm.

The listing goes on to list the position responsibilities, including:

  • “Define and execute the vision and roadmap for WDI’s AI-first software platform, transforming how Imagineers design and deliver experiences”
  • “Lead the implementation of AI-powered developer tools and infrastructure across WDI software teams”
  • “Translate emerging AI capabilities into production-ready platform features that accelerate creative and engineering workflows”

The position is in Glendale, CA with a salary range of $228,700 to $306,700 per year.

Disney and AI

Despite pushback from many fans, Disney continues to embrace artificial intelligence. Regarding AI, newly appointed CEO Josh D’Amaro said “embracing new technologies” has been key to the company’s success.

Imagineers are already using AI to create advanced robots, as highlighted in an episode of We Call It Imagineering.

Dana Walden’s priorities in her new position as President and Chief Creative Officer of The Walt Disney Company will reportedly include incorporating AI into movie production.

Three months after announcing a three-year partnership with Disney, OpenAI shutdown Sora, their generative AI video platform. Through Disney’s deal with the company, users could access over 200 Disney characters in Sora.

Disney has sent multiple cease and desist letters and joined lawsuits against other AI companies using their IPs without permission.
