Animal Kingdom Addressing Trees Impacted by Deep Freeze, New Plantings

After the deep freeze temperatures at the beginning of February, many plants around Walt Disney World were impacted. This includes big trees like the banyan tree at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which is now being trimmed in what appears to be an attempt to save it.

As you can see above, many of the banyan’s branches are bare or just starting to sprout more foliage again. Banyan trees are not particularly hardy trees and prefer warm temperatures. Although they can survive a brief cold snap, this can result in slow recovery or stunted growth.

On a visit to Animal Kingdom three months ago, before the deep freeze, the Banyan Tree had significantly more foliage:

Before the deep freeze in February, the Banyan Tree had significantly more foliage, as seen in the photo above.

By mid-March, much of the foliage had browned on the banyan tree.

Other trees in the area appear to have also received trims, like the ones pictured above. It seems from the lack of foliage that many of these trees are still recovering from the cold.

It also appears that new foliage is being planted in other areas of Animal Kingdom as well. We spotted several new plantings near the Simba, Timon and Pumbaa statues by the Tree of Life, for instance.
