‘Avatar’ Producer Says Sequels Are ‘Full Speed Ahead’ After Success of ‘Fire and Ash’

After surpassing $1.3 billion at the box office, Avatar: Fire and Ash has lit the way for the franchise’s upcoming sequels to move forward as planned.

Upcoming Avatar Films

In November 2025, James Cameron stated on the podcast The Town with Matthew Belloni that he was ready to walk away from the cinematic future of Avatar if Avatar: Fire and Ash was not a box office hit to justify the sequels. Well, it seems everything worked out because producer Rae Sanchini told Inverse that the sequels were "full speed ahead."

Well, it seems everything worked out because producer Rae Sanchini told Inverse that the sequels were “full speed ahead.”

“Right now we’re figuring out the schedule,” she told the outlet. “We’re working hard on it right now, budgeting, scheduling, planning, building out our new pipeline for them. As far as we’re concerned, we’re full speed ahead.”

According to Sanchini, the “brilliant” scripts for both Avatar 4 and 5 are complete, though filming has not yet started on either project. She noted that filming should commence “in the not too distant future.”

Sam Worthington on Acting for Avatar

20th Century Studios

Sam Worthington, who plays Jake Sully in the franchise, recently opened up to The Independent about how the films have allowed him to take more risks as an actor.

“We’re unlike Marvel movies, in the sense of… it feels like an independent movie when we make it,” he told the outlet. “We don’t have outside pressures, or expectations from the press, or the studio, or the community. It doesn’t affect what we do. And that’s why we can take more risks. It’s not like we have to get scenes completed by today, or the studio is going to be upset. We just play and create. People don’t understand that.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash took home Disney’s only Oscar win at the 98th Academy Awards this year. An Avatar land is currently planned for Disney California Adventure.
