A staff member who had been working on the upcoming movie recently claimed that Disney scrapped the film for being “too female.”
Disney Scraps Pixar Film ‘Be Fri’

Be Fri, short for “best friends” (like one half of a “Best Friends” heart necklace), was going to center around two teenage girls whose friendship started to strain when they discovered their favorite TV show was real, setting them off on an adventure.
The platonic friend break-up film was in development for several years before it was ultimately scrapped. Studio higher-ups kept asking for major changes, and with each round of notes, Disney felt that little boys couldn’t see themselves in the film enough. A staffer heard secondhand that it was like the Disney reps were saying, “We can’t have a girl power movie.”
Another staff member hopes that the reps who scrapped Be Fri are looking at other popular female-led movies like KPop Demon Hunters and are kicking themselves due to Netflix “doing exactly what we wanted to do.”
