REVIEW: Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese at Disney California Adventure

On a recent visit to Disney California Adventure, we grabbed one of the new Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. We tried it to let you know what we think of this new Pym concoction.

Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese – $16.79

Pepper & Onion Grilled Cheesesteak, Topped with Cheese Sauce and Crunchy Manipulated Particles, served with Potato Bites

Located at Pym Test Kitchen in Disney California Adventure

This one left me stumped.

The sandwich interior is very good. The meat is cooked perfectly, thin and moist, and mixed with tasty melted cheese. Add in fresh and flavorful roasted peppers, and it’s the makings of a great cheesesteak. The cheese drizzle is an okay yellow queso. But the bread is where this loses me.

Now the quality of the bread itself is there, you can tell it’s fresh, but the method of making it a grilled cheese looks to me like they put a crusty Italian roll in a panini press and by making it flat, caused the would-be top half to smush into a hard, crusty chunk of bread. So the way you eat this is almost like a slice of pizza. And I was lost in search of all the extra cheese that would classify this as a grilled cheese, as opposed to a regular Philly Cheesesteak.

The crunchy hot puffs and onion rings on top add a nice textural difference, and I am always happy to see pickles on the side. Overall, this wasnt bad and will do the job if you are craving a Philly Cheesesteak at Disneyland. Though the whimsy and uniqueness were a valiant effort, the smush of the bread takes this rating down a few pegs.
