Disney’s New 'Star Wars' Movie Loses at Box Office to Horror Film with Under $1 Million Budget

Despite being number 1 at the box office its opening weekend, a horror film with just a small fraction of the budget of The Mandalorian and Grogu just passed its domestic box office numbers.

The Mandalorian and Grogu, which was released on May 22, cost $165 million to make and has now been surpassed by a low-budget horror film that cost roughly $1 million to make. Obsession is now sitting on top of the latest Star Wars film in the U.S. domestic box office. Despite only being released in 2,655 theaters, Mando and Grogu are playing in 4,300.

Not only has Obsession overtaken the Star Wars film’s box office contender spot, but it has also already grossed $73,524,085 on its tiny $1 million budget in the last week. On the other hand, per Box Office Mojo, The Mandalorian and Grogu has only grossed $108,823,848.

As of the time of writing, The Mandalorian and Grogu is the lowest-grossing Star Wars film of all time. It was about $1 million shy of the 2018 Memorial Day weekend release of Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The Obsession takeover even carries over to critic and audience scores, according to aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The Mandalorian and Grogu, with 275 reviews, has a 62% critic score and an 88% audience score. Whereas Obsession, with 231 reviews, is sitting pretty at a 96% critics’ score and a 94% audience score.

Time will tell if the box office battle between these two films will tilt back in the galaxy’s favor or remain firmly in the horror realm.
