‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Becomes Lowest ‘Star Wars’ Box Office Opening

The domestic box office opening of the movie brought in $102 million, while the international box office saw $63 million. The $102 million four-day domestic opening fell slightly behind 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, which previously held the record as the lowest-grossing opening for the franchise ($103 million domestically).

The film was expected to meet or exceed $80 million domestically, so it did better than critics believed. Critic reviews are mixed so far. The current Rotten Tomatoes score is 62% but will probably continue to change as reviews continue to roll in.

The film cost Disney and Lucasfilm approximately $300 million to produce and market. It’s also the first Star Wars movie in seven years — since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, which was incredibly successful.

Instead, Disney has largely been focusing on Disney+ titles like “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Ahsoka,” “Andor,” and “Skeleton Crew.”
