While it’s not particularly fair to compare any film’s third weekend at the theaters to the premiere weekend of another, the Star Wars brand name has not done Lucasfilm’s latest release any favors for its staying power.
The Box Office Slump Continues for Mando and Grogu

While The Mandalorian and Grogu sits just shy of a milestone $300 million at the box office, the first theatrical Star Wars film in years has fallen far behind the rest of the pack at cinemas worldwide.
According to the latest weekend box office numbers, the Lucasfilm release earned an estimated $10 million domestically over the June 5-7 weekend, bringing its domestic total to $155.8 million. The film’s worldwide total now stands at approximately $293.6 million, with $137.8 million coming from international markets.
The third-weekend performance placed The Mandalorian and Grogu behind several newer releases, including Scary Movie, Masters of the Universe, Backrooms, Obsession, and The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act.
Scary Movie led the weekend with an estimated $55 million domestic debut, while Masters of the Universe opened in second place with $29.3 million.
The Mandalorian and Grogu opened on May 22 and earned around $102 million domestically over Memorial Day weekend, making it the worst-performing debut for a live-action Star Wars film to date.
For comparison, the film earned about $24.5 million over its second domestic weekend before dropping to $10 million in its third. It also lost a significant number of theaters, playing in 3,355 locations over the latest weekend after opening in 4,300 theaters.
Directed by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian and Grogu continues the story of Din Djarin and Grogu from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. The film marks the first Star Wars feature film released theatrically since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.
While the movie is approaching an undeniably sizable $300 million in ticket sales worldwide, estimates suggest this may just barely break even with the film’s production budget.
The summer box office will only get more competitive in the weeks ahead, with additional major releases arriving throughout June, including Disney’s own Toy Story 5.
