Disney+ Free Tier

Disney+ could soon add a free tier as viewers increasingly turn to competitors without paywalls.

Business Insider reports that two people familiar with the matter said Disney is discussing making some content available for free.

An employee shared that Disney Entertainment’s Chief Product & Technology Officer Adam Smith spoke about the possible free tier during a streaming town hall on Thursday. He did not give a timeline for this initiative, however.

The internal talks are reportedly part of an ongoing discussion about concepts to better serve fans.

More viewers are turning to free streaming services like YouTube, Tubi, and The Roku Channel. Nielsen data indicates they accounted for 18.7% of U.S. watch time in April, an increase from 16.8% in April 2025 and 12.7% in April 2024.

The basic Disney+ and Hulu bundle with ads is currently $11.99 for the first six months, and then $12.99 per month. Without ads, it’s initially $17.99 and then $19.99. The highest tier is the Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Unlimited Bundle Premium, which is $44.99 with no ads. Disney+ launched vertical video a few months ago.
