Disney's 'Hexed' One of the First Animated Films Approved for California's Expanded Tax Incentive Program

Disney’s upcoming Hexed is among 41 new projects approved for California’s expanded production tax incentive program. Last year’s update to the program allows animated projects to qualify for the first time.

Along with Hexed, DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek prequel Donkey was also approved.

“For over a hundred years, California has been home to not only The Walt Disney Company but also an incredibly talented community of filmmakers, artists and production professionals,” said Alan Bergman, chairman of Disney Entertainment Studios, The Walt Disney Company. “We are happy to have a number of projects selected for the state’s Film & Television Tax Credit Program and are grateful to the California Film Commission, Governor Newsom, and the legislative leaders who have worked to strengthen opportunities for production here as we continue to invest in California’s world-class creative workforce.”

In 2025, California expanded the program’s eligibility requirements and raised its annual cap from $330 million to $750 million.

Across the full fiscal year (July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026), the program awarded 170 projects. The California Film Commission estimates the program generated nearly 35,000 cast and crew jobs, 6,630 filming days, and $6.6 billion in direct production spending in California.

Earlier this year, the commission reported that Disney was awarded a total of $128.8 million in tax credits.

Hexed is the next film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, scheduled for release on November 25, 2026.
