Two Disneyland guests shared a photo and video of shockingly overflowing trash cans in the Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance queue at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, sparking conversations on the cleanliness of the parks these days.
Overflowing Trash Cans at Disneyland
Reddit user @Ocmrm shared a picture of the cans, one of which is actually a recycling bin, with trash sticking out of them. The user wrote, “Spot holding for large late parties and overflowing trash cans[.] Two things I hate seeing while I’m at the parks.”
The photo was posted on Thursday, July 23, and @Ocmrm indicated it was taken that same day.
Meanwhile, Instagram user @tyguythomas (Tyler Thomas) shared a video of the same trash cans that appeared to be taken later in the day, with even more trash on top of the cans and on the ground around them.
Commenters on both posts discussed whether or not this was due to bad guest behavior, custodians not doing their job, or Disney staffing and pay at large.
Reddit user @Chris-Jean-Alice said, “A bunch of people here don’t remember the time when trash cans like this were not the norms at all. There was proper number of janitorial that took care of these. Same thing with the bathrooms, they used to be spotless.”
User @Zealousideal_Act5573 said, “[Disneyland] has been short staffed on custodial for awhile. I’m talking like 500 people for the whole park while [Disney California Adventure] has 1000. The company was on a hiring freeze until just recent and should be getting more soon. They had the job listing posted recently.”
User @blakjakalope blamed Disney and guests: “The cast isn’t getting paid enough, and are not supported enough. But also people are trashier too. They don’t seem to care to be responsible or respectful.”
@CabbageStockExchange said, “Walt Disney would absolutely be livid at this”.
Thomas, whose video was captioned “Things I’ve NEVER seen at Disney before,” clarified in a comment that he wasn’t blaming custodial Cast Members: “They have a hard job. Just surprised cuz I never see this. They def need more help and work hard hours so bless them.”
Some compared the trash cans to Universal, Six Flags, or Knott’s Berry Farm and said Disney cleanliness has gone down in the past few years, particularly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Instagram user @benludmer said on Thomas’ post, “Saw the same thing in the line at Rise last summer and just couldn’t believe.”
Being in a queue, these trash cans may not be emptied as frequently as others in the park as they are harder for Cast Members to access.
A few commenters also referenced this summer’s high heat as a factor for custodians. These trash cans are in the shade but still outdoors.
Walt Disney World is rolling out larger trash cans and recycling bins with solar-powered compactors, so they can hold more trash and hopefully avoid an overflow like this. Such cans have not appeared at Disneyland Resort, however.
