Cinderella Castle Moat Draining Begins at Magic Kingdom

Pumps have arrived and moat draining has begun around Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom. The castle is being repainted to restore its original color scheme.

Temporary dams were installed in the moat a few days ago outside Tomorrowland and Liberty Square. There is now a pump next to each dam, covered by green camouflage netting. Some of the tubing around the pumps are covered by green scrims.

Crews finished preparing the dams and began draining the water on Wednesday morning. We could hear the pumps running and see that the water level was lower than normal. It usually covers the concrete curbs on the sides of the moat.

In some areas, there are visible lines where the water level usually stops.

With water removed, crew members will be able to get closer to the castle in lifts.

Cinderella Castle was repainted pink, royal blue, and dark gray in 2020/2021 for the 50th anniversary of Magic Kingdom. After five years, it will be restored to its classic light gray and blue color scheme over the next few months.

Though the moat has yet to be drained, painting began on January 28. Due to the painting project, the Magic Kingdom welcome show is currently audio only, pyrotechnics were removed from Mickey’s Magical Friendship Faire and the show is only performing in the afternoons, and Happily Ever After has been slightly modified.
