We finally have some more details on the upcoming animated series centered on Disney’s Oswald, including the first update on its release schedule.
‘Oswald the Lucky Rabbit’ Coming in 2027

Jon Favreau has shared a new update on his upcoming Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Disney+ series, confirming that at least part of the project’s animation is being handled by The SPA Studios in Spain. Favreau discussed the series during an interview with Spanish outlet Moobys while promoting Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Speaking about the Oswald project, Favreau said the series is “being animated here in Spain at SPA Studios,” adding that he visited the studio during his trip. Favreau also confirmed the series is expected to release next year, 2027, and he closed out the interview with emphasis on the art for the series, gleefully adding: “All 2D animation by artists, human artists. It’s a beautiful story.”
The project has previously been described as a live-action/animated hybrid, though Favreau’s remarks here indicate that the project will lean heavily on traditional 2D animation for Oswald rather than relying solely on computer animation.
Favreau is writing and producing the Disney+ series, with Ravi Cabot-Conyers (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Encanto), Mykal-Michelle Harris (Raven’s Home, Mixed-ish), and Ryder Allen (The Penguin, Palmer) in the lead live-action roles.
Cabot-Conyers will play Jake, described as a “hardworking middle school student with a big heart.” Harris will portray Jen, an “artistic middle schooler who is always ahead of the game.” Allen will be Taylor, “a middle school student who is cautious but avoids turning down his friends.”
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was created by Walt Disney in 1927 and appeared in a series of early animated shorts before Universal took control of the character. Disney later reacquired rights to Oswald in 2006, and the character has since appeared in merchandise, Disney Parks offerings, video games, and a 2022 hand-drawn short released by Disney.

The SPA Studios

The SPA Studios, or Sergio Pablos Animation, is based in Madrid, Spain, founded by Sergio Pablos and Marisa Román in 2004. Pablos previously worked at Walt Disney Feature Animation on films including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, and Tarzan, while Román also worked at Disney Feature Animation before co-founding the studio.
The SPA Studios is perhaps best known for Klaus, Netflix’s first original animated feature, which was written, produced, and directed by Pablos. Klaus was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and won a BAFTA, seven Annie Awards, and two Quirino Awards. The studio also notes that Illumination’s Despicable Me was first conceived at SPA, and the company was also involved in original development tied to Smallfoot.
