TASTE TEST: New Grocery Mickey Ice Cream Bars Vs. Theme Park Mickey Bars

As we’ve previously reported, Mickey Ice Cream Bars have found their way out of the theme parks and into grocery stores to celebrate Mickey’s 90th birthday. But the big question remains – are these grocery store Mickey bars the real deal or just a theme park imposter?

Reporter and ice cream eater Nathan Hartman took on the tough task of answering that question.

Taste Test & Initial Findings

We begin by stuffing a grocery Mickey bar in an insulated backpack with some ice and heading to Epcot for some on the spot taste testing.

Ingredient Review

With the test complete, it was time to look into why the inferior (though tasty) grocery bar was so different from the parks bar we know and love. Two points jumped out when reviewing the packaging.

  1. Our theme park bar, as said in the video, has a more milky sweetness than the grocery bought. Why? Well, the number one ingredient in the park’s bar is milkfat and nonfat milk. The grocery bar? Skim milk.
  2. The chocolate coating on the park’s bar was darker in taste and hue. Most likely because the park’s bar is labeled as “bitter chocolate” whereas the grocery bars states only cocoa.

Final Judgement

Though the grocery Mickey bars are certainly tasty and, by the box, better on your wallet (a whopping $1.42 per bar compared to one for $5.75) there’s no denying that it’s a less robust experience.

Smaller in size and lacking that thick ice cream taste or bitter chocolate coating, it just can’t hold up to the theme park version. Then again, maybe its job is to hold you over till you can get the real thing and, for that, some will be grateful.

  1. But does a piece of the chocolate on the grocery bars fall directly onto any light colored clothing you are wearing, like with the park bars? ; )

  2. Hands down I will always prefer the parks bar! That is one of the things that makes the park so special, the tradition of getting a Mickey ice cream bar. Big news is that at our mall in Wisconsin I saw they are selling Dole Whip at the Great American Cookie!!! Wonder if all locations are selling that too??

    • I’ve discovered a few places in my area that have Dole Whips. I still love my park one though. When your not sitting outside The tiki room eating it, it’s just not the same.

  3. Haven’t tried the grocery store version yet but if it’s not bitter like the park version I’ll probably prefer it. I only had a park bar once and was put off by the dark chocolate. Will never get it again. Maybe the grocery store one is milk chocolate.
