PHOTOS: In-Depth Look at Lightsaber Hilts, Kyber Crystals, and Holocrons Available at Savi’s Workshop in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Earlier today, Disney gave us the inside story on The Gatherers, a group of men and women who have dedicated their lives to restoring balance in the galaxy by passing on their knowledge of the Force and the ancient ways of the Jedi. The Gatherers guide those who seek their assistance in creating their own unique, customized lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. (If you’re curious as to what the experience is like, we have some clues from the audition posting, including the sample dialogue you might hear upon entering the workshop.)

Once learning about ancient Jedi lore, guests can enter the Builder’s Table, a large oval-shaped table inside the workshop that can accommodate up to 14 builders at a time to choose their crystal and craft their lightsaber. Attendees at this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Chicago got a special sneak peek at what these kyber crystals and lightsaber hilts will look like, and Polygon gave us an in-depth photoshoot of the amazing merchandise!

There are four themes of lightsabers that guests can build, depending on their chosen path:

Peace and Justice

Salvaged from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships, these lightsaber pieces were created for Force wielders of the Republic era. The simple designs reflect the commitment to the devout life of those whom they were created by – the Jedi Order – the once guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy.

Power and Control

Reclaimed from the ashes of the rumored Sith homeworld and abandoned Sith temples, these lightsaber pieces were originally forged by the Sith of their time. Characterized by sharp and strong forms, these pieces showcase the brutality and relentlessness of the Sith’s insatiable desire for power and control.

Elemental Nature

As we have been told, The Force is an energy field created by all living things; it surrounds us, penetrates us and binds the galaxy together. These lightsaber pieces are born of that same Force. They are as unique as the user and as the elements of nature: the wood from a Brylark tree, a bone of the Cartusion whale or even a tooth from a Rancor.

Protection and Defense

Cultivated from a time forgotten, these earliest lightsaber pieces contain designs and inscriptions that are shrouded in mystery. Believed to be created for protection and defense, conferring anonymity and symbolizing emotional detachment, a lightsaber made from these pieces reconnects the user with the most ancient wellspring of the Force.

The Gatherers have amassed a great collection of stories, kyber crystals, and other saber parts from around the galaxy. Before getting to build their lightsaber of choice, guests can pick between five different colored kyber crystals.

All crystal cuts will be different, which means no two crystals will be identical. Once selected, crystals are inserted into a holocron, allowing iconic characters from the Star Wars universe to speak Jedi (or Sith) wisdom to their apprentices.

Holocrons will allow guests to interact with even more aspects of their chosen kyber crystal.

A series of 10 legacy lightsabers based on Star Wars canon will also be sold at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. We always knew the urge to buy a lightsaber in Galaxy’s Edge would be intense, but it just got worse…

Awesome! Thanks for the details. The kit shows the hilt base plus 10 parts. Do you get to keep all 10 parts so you can change it up later?

Do we know which colors will be available? I’ve seen blue green red purple yellow and white which is six colors but I’ve read that four or five will be available.

In the Polygon video, the host says green, red, purple or blue crystals will be offered at Savi’s Workshop. However, there are pictures of white and orange/yellow crystals so I assume they will be available as a separate purchase, perhaps at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

this was already an intense “shut up and take my money” situation, but they keep exceeding expectations.
