Leave it up to the attraction based on wild and wacky new cartoons to bring animation physics to the big screen. When Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway opens on March 4th, 2020, guests will step through the movie screen and join Mickey, Minnie, and friends like never before––bursting into a world where mouse rules apply. And when Imagineering says you’ll be stepping through a movie screen, they mean it.

As with any attraction, the story begins in the queue. As was confirmed in today’s media preview, the facade of the Chinese Theatre and the first part of the exterior and interior queue will remain the same as they were for The Great Movie Ride, with the original lobby still very much intact. The displays will be different, featuring posters Mickey Mouse shorts such as “Mumbai Madness,” “Wonders of the Deep” and “Wish Upon a Coin”, but otherwise it will still have all of its original charm.

A new photo featured in a piece by the OC Register shows a pair of Imagineers at work on the opening scene of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway inside the Chinese Theatre in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. You can still see all of the red and gold accents that were present during the age of The Great Movie Ride.

The large former pre-show theater that showed classic movie trailers for The Great Movie Ride has been broken down into two identical pre-show movie theaters, where guests will go in to see the new animated short, “Perfect Picnic.” This new Mickey Mouse cartoon features Minnie and Pluto heading to the park for a picnic, with the screen ultimately opening up and guests walking through it to the load area of the attraction. Guests will then board Goofy’s train in a train barn before embarking on the zany ride.

According to the Register,

A blast of smoke at the end of a cartoon film short introducing Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will reveal an explosive hole blown in the movie screen, Walt Disney Imagineering announced Wednesday.

“It’s just the very beginning of what we have in store for you,” Imagineering senior creative director Charita Carter said during a tour of the new ride. “A lot of surprises and a lot of opportunities to be delighted.”

As was prominently featured in the new merchandise that will be released on opening day for the attraction, Mickey and Minnie sing “Nothing can stop us now!” as calamity ensues on the trip that spans waterfalls, drainage pipes, a carnival, and even a tornado.
