Businesses in Rhode Island Receive Tax Refund Checks Signed by Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney Due to Technical Glitch

Businesses in Rhode Island have received refund checks “signed” by Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney, according to WJAR. The majority of the checks were corporation tax refunds. They should have been signed by Rhode Island General Treasurer Seth Magaziner and State Controller Peter Keenan.

Jade Borgeson, Chief of Staff for the Department of Revenue, said the mistake was due to a technical glitch.

As a result of a technical error in the Division of Taxation’s automated refund check printing system, approximately 176 checks with invalid signature lines were printed and mailed to taxpayers on Monday 7/27/2020. The invalid signature lines were incorrectly sourced from the Division’s test print files.

Fake signatures of fictional characters like Mickey Mouse or deceased celebrities like Walt Disney are perfect for test prints, but not-so-perfect for people who need to cash their check.

The Rhode Island Department of Revenue is reportedly reaching out to impacted taxpayers to apologize for the inconvenience. Any taxpayers who received a misprinted check can report it by phone at 401-574-8829, option 3, or by email at tax.assist@tax.ri.gov. They will mail corrected checks within one week.
