Live-Action “Mulan” Release on Disney+ Will Not Be Available Via In-App Purchase

There have been many questions regarding the release of the live-action Mulan film since Disney announced it would premiere on Disney+ on September 4. Rather than simply being added to the platform, Mulan will be available for an additional $29.99 for anyone with a Disney+ subscription. It looks like this “Premier Access” payment will only be available through the web, and not through any apps.

Rich Greenfield pointed out this development on Twitter.

The info page for Mulan states Disney+ will offer Premier Access “for $29.99 on disneyplus.com and select platforms. Once you have Premier Access to Mulan, you can watch as many times as you want on any platform where Disney+ is available.”

This implies that the initial Premier Access will not be available on all platforms. Guests would have to access Disney+ on a web browser to pay for access to the film. They would then be able to watch it on the web or on a mobile app.

All in-app purchases are split between app stores and the owner of the app. In not allowing payment via iOS and Google Play stores, Disney gets around this split and keeps all of the revenue. Unfortunately, this means that anyone who exclusively uses Disney+ via app will have to access a web browser to pay for Mulan.

What do you think about Premier Access to Mulan? Will you be paying the $29.99 to see it sooner rather than later?
