“Lizzie McGuire” Reboot Cancelled at Disney+, According to Star Hilary Duff

Sadly, it looks like we’ll never know what happened to Lizzie McGuire, as the reboot planned for Disney+ has been cancelled.

The show’s star, Hilary Duff, confirmed the news on her Instagram account on Wednesday.

Duff remarked, “I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work, but sadly & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen. I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves. We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her. I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn’t align.”

The show, a reboot of the Disney Channel series that ran from 2001 to 2004, was formally announced at last year’s D23 Expo, reuniting original cast members Duff, Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine, Jake Thomas and Adam Lamberg. The original description read that “the new Lizzie McGuire story picks up as the titular character is just about to turn 30. She seemingly has it all—her dream job as an assistant to a fancy New York City decorator, her dream guy, and a picturesque Brooklyn apartment—but things aren’t always as they seem. With a little help from her friends, her loving family, and her 13-year-old alter-ego in animated form, Lizzie navigates the ups and downs of adulthood.”

The show was even featured in a montage of offerings coming to the streaming service this year, but not long after, problems quickly arose. Back in January, the show’s creator, Terri Minsky, stepped away as showrunner after just two episodes. Duff also asked Disney to move the reboot to Hulu, calling it a “disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30 year old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating.” Now, it seems Lizzie’s journey is at its end, at least for now.
