BREAKING: White House Considering Domestic Travel Ban for Florida with Rising U.K. Strain Numbers in State

According to various news reports, the White House is considering travel restrictions, and possibly even bans on domestic flights to and from the state of Florida.

Outbreaks of the new variants — including a highly contagious one first identified in the United Kingdom, as well as others from South Africa and Brazil that scientists worry can evade existing vaccines — have lent urgency to a review of potential travel restrictions within the United States, one federal official said.

While COVID-19 cases in Florida have declined in recent weeks, the U.K. variant has spread rapidly in the state during that time. It now accounts for up to 15% of new cases in Florida, according to estimates from a team of researchers modeling the variant’s growth across the country — up from about 1% at the beginning of January.

The reports say that no decision is imminent, but this would obviously impact The Walt Disney World Resort. That being said, it is no secret that most theme park guests at the moment live in Florida or travel with their own vehicle.

Some governments require testing and a negative result before flying, a restriction recently enacted by the Canadian government for their residents returning from the United States. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and CDC Director Rochelle Walensky have said they are discussing the possibility of such requirements on domestic flights within the U.S. at this time.

    • I hear that!! 3 weeks from today we leave for Disney. Ugggg This will be the 3rd trip cancelled if it passes.

      • A pandemic that has a survival rate of over 99%……. it amazes me that people are so willing to give up so much freedom at the demands of a few politicians and government bureaucrats.

        • There are no complete data to reliably estimate the actual mortality (death) rate of this virus. Even if you are correct, 1% of the current population is around 3 million people. It is not just mortality (death) but the impact on ICUs and hospitals offering very intensive care required of patients suffering severe Covid, not to mention the healthcare workers who have cared for these patients for months, watching them die horrible deaths without loved ones at their side. In addition to deaths, there are thousands who are suffering long-term morbidity (medical issues) including heart and kidney damage. Letting this virus ‘run wild’ results in mutations which can evade not only vaccines, but also cause reinfections, some of which may cause more serious disease and higher mortality, as happened with the flu epidemic in 1918.

          • Wow Kim is really, really smart. You do realize it is less than 1% of ppl “testing positive” have died, not 1% of the population. Live life!!

      • We would still like to be outside where its not below zero. Not even needing to go in restaurants or anything. Need to fly because its a 20 hour drive and can’t take that much time off work and school . It’s for mental health too!

      • Just because you are afraid of a virus with a 99% survival rate doesn’t mean other people shouldn’t live their life. Stop being so judgemental and worry about your own life.

        • Which means it will kill about 3 million people in the United States, not counting the thousands of cases of long-term morbidity, and increase the number of mutant variants which can evade detection and possibly result in even more severe disease, as happened in the flu epidemic of 1918.

      • 5 rescheduled trips since last March. Planning travel to Florida to visit with my daughter, granddaughter, and son in law.

    • Us too, been a long year. We just want to sit outside in warm weather! Being inside because it’s 10 below for a LONG time isn’t healthy either.

    • I would think vacation is the least.of the worries. Banning freedom of travel is a bigger concern than vacation. Wait til they set up check points in America.

    • I almost died from Covid back in July…every 28 days ever since I recovered I donate convalescent blood in the hopes it will save more lives from this virus. My mother in law died from the virus in August. We were always strict maskers from the very beginning and still are. We live in Florida. We used to cruise at least 5 times a year….we miss it. But….if you are going to vacation…you have to be smart about it. Mask up….always. Carry and use hand sanitizer. Try to avoid crowds. You are right….hiding in your house is no way to live. We MUST learn to live with this virus.

  1. As always negative Tom has to jump on before there is anything to really verify. He loves negativity. One day it will catch up with you and your propaganda mistruths.

      • Well, and you mistakenly said that Canadians are required by their government to get tested prior to entering the USA. I believe I read in several other places that the Canadian government is requiring people be tested prior to entering Canada, not leaving Canada…

      • I was just at WDW this past January, the cleaning/disinfecting precautions were very visible, I felt that my safety was a priority

        • Dawn I was there in November and I agree with what you said at WDW. But as soon as you leave WDW it is very different outside WDW in Florida. Many with no masks…

  2. Yes, ban travel to Florida. That should stop the spread…or wait, slow the spread. Everything else they have done has seemed to work.

    • How about stop international travel. Why do the people of USA always get the bans? It came from China. Shut down all international travel, till everyone is back to work in USA.

  3. Negative Covid test before traveling to FL and upon arrival. You wouldn’t walk around with a lit match in a hairspray factory.

    • Pretty sure you’re completely wrong and should educate yourself better before you comment.

Travel bans, lockdowns, mask mandates, and other actions are absolutely legal and enforceable during a health emergency.

      • Not that I agree with unrestricted travel, but you really should look stuff up before you accuse people of being uneducated, it makes you come across as condescending – especially when you’re incorrect.

There is substantial Supreme Court precedent that the federal government can’t restrict interstate travel. If you look up freedom of movement, you will find numerous and consistently upheld Supreme Court cases banning the federal government from doing this. Wikipedia has a nice synopsis.

You are correct that lockdowns, travel bans, mask mandates are legal. However, they can’t necessarily be imposed by the federal government. Only states can enact some of these restrictions. This is how NY imposed its travel bans from other states.

Not trying to be mean, I just thought it might be helpful to know. What the federal government may be able to do is ban interstate commerce from Florida until the state itself imposes these bans. While this would be political suicide, it would be an effective way to force Florida’s hand.

    • Where in the Constitution does it outline travel? The answer to that, because you, like so many, seem confused about what the Constitution actually is, is “nowhere”. Just because people don’t like something doesn’t mean it’s unconstitutional. No “life, liberty, and the pursuit” of happiness does not mean you get to do anything you want, or that no one can tell you no about anything. If that was the case, there would be no laws.

YES, travel bans are legal. Just like mask mandates, lockdown (which, by the way, is actually in the Constitution), and other limitations during a pandemic response.

      • People need to learn their history. This happened in 1918 and the restrictions were more stringent and without a dissenting population. It curbed what could have been even worse. Educate yourself People.

    • Public Health Service Act that uses language from an 1890 law allowing the federal government to make and enforce regulations to prevent the spread of communicable diseases “from one State or possession into any other State or possession.

      • I’d be interested where you found that quote. I’ve been looking into this and can only find reference to restricting travel from “foreign states” ie other countries. I might be wrong. It would surprise me because there’s pretty clear Supreme Court precedent that this can’t be done outright by the federal government.

  4. Yep I’m just sick of all of this! I leave in 2 weeks but now I’m concerned about my trip in December!!!

    • I’m worried too! My family and I are supposed to be leaving the 26th of September to be there on their 50th anniversary.

      • Keep them SAFE. 50 th Anniversary. This is the very group, including me, that they are concerned about, for now to take extra CNN precautions. Please understand this.

    • I live in Florida went to Disney in August and travel to Palm Beach and Miami often we are fine. I’m in St Pete

  5. They are so worried about a South African variant yet cases in South Africa have declined 80% in the past month. In the UK cases have declined 67% in the past month

  6. lol of course… we’re supposed to fly down from MA on the 27th… would be hilarious (except to my wife) if this ban happens while we’re there as we’ll be staying until the 6th.

    • They should ban driving too if they are going to ban flying. Just have Florida completely locked up. In particular, shut Disney World down like California does. To be consistent, I mean.

  7. There is this little thing about America citizens having the right to travel, sometimes known as freedom of movement. It is unconstitutional to ban travel within the United States.
But I guess that doesn’t mean much to this administration.

    • There are different protocols in place during a pandemic. Freedom of movement isn’t in the Constitutional amendments or the Bill of Rights. It is just something that we believe in this country. We don’t have passports to move from state to state. And you can go into or out of Florida even with the FLIGHT ban. It says nothing about DRIVING or even taking the TRAIN!!!

    • You have freedom of movement but no right to fly there. Or to not have a covid test before doing so. That’s how constitutional issues work.

  8. The WH is pissed florida doesnt fit their narrative. The shutdown in california has done nothing to curb spread while throwing millions into the broken EDD system. I’m here on vacation from CA, and its just sad how things are operating safely here and everything is closed back home.

  9. So if we already are booked and driving down to stay the 19th to the 28th of this month since we’re not flying would be OK

  10. You’re a Disney blog and are nowhere near the level of credibility to post clickbait headlines about COVID like this.

Shame on you, go back to reporting about updates to new rides. Leave serious issues to the scientists.

      • tony tony TONY
if you mustered the same amount of energy into entering the backspace button until this comment was deleted as you did into writing this
you wouldn’t have gotten the comment of shame by tom
        lol

    • This issue is of complete relevance to Disney World. And, nobody trusts the scientists to deal with the serious issues anymore they’ve botched this so badly over the last year, so not sure why we need to leave anything to them any longer. Tom’s more accurate than them anyway.

    • If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nuthin’ at all…Thumper. Btw…all other disney blogs are saying the same. Educate yourself.

    • The problem is the scientists are picking and choosing. In this case if they close down Florida, then they should close down California and New York.

    • Scientists have nothing to do with reporting White House decisions that will influence WDW. It’s the Disney blog’s job.

  11. So foreign people can fly in, including from the countries with the so-called new strains like UK and Brazil, but not our own people who are already getting vaccinated? Makes sense, they’re making sure terrorists and criminals at Gitmo receive vaccines before we do, why not ban domestic travel too?

  12. I have plans to drive there from the Houston area in mid-May. Unless the place I’m renting is not taking anyone in, I’m still going. They admit to knowing nothing and they’re thinking of worse case scenarios. Florida and Texas has not been hit any better or worse than any other state and didn’t lock down for long. There’s no point to lockdowns. They don’t work.

  13. That is discriminatory towards a certain group of people with disabilities so I think that the ADA. would cancel that

  14. We just flew in from Louisiana this past Friday, hit Universal Saturday and Disney thru Tuesday and flew out Tuesday afternoon. Had no issues! DVC members and passholders for both places. Just a quickie for the 1st of the year. Met several people from out of state that flew in. Lots of locals also. Wasnt very packed great time to go.

  15. If they are going to ban, they need to not only ban flights, but driving and walking too. Otherwise what good is it? They also need to ban within Florida, like shut down Disney World and just lock up in general, like California does to Disneyland. Otherwise, they are just plugging one leak in the bucket when the bucket has many other leaks.

  16. If read correctly, this is about domestic FLIGHTS into and out of Florida. COVID is a problem there and with airports being INTERNATIONAL hubs there, and the rise of the new strains of the virus from other countries, this is actually a decent plan. With the rise of cases of the original strain in California it could be a plan there, too. Nothing is said about DRIVING into or out of Florida. This has nothing to do with their governor or politics. This has to do with the pandemic and our health and safety. Planning a trip? Don’t want to drive? Get to a state close to Florida, ie Georgia or Alabama. Drive from there.

  17. Tom, the administration used the term restriction not ban, and it would be done only with state and local approval. Stop putting out anti Biden administration false news.

  18. Yes, let’s ban travel to Florida. But open up our borders and take down the wall. Let in all these illegals who have not been tested for Covid. That’s all ok!!!! They just want to punish DeSantis because he’s a Republican!!! And he’s doing a great job!!!!

  19. Welcome news to this native Floridian.
An earlier move along similar lines would almost certainly have prevented this new variant from reaching FL and also the mass exodus of NY, NJ and other Northeastern residents to wide-open, no restrictions, come on down Florida.

  20. This is the very reason why it was so important to research treatments, because the virus will mutate. The constitution prohibits bans on interstate travel. White house officials should read it.

  21. So let me get this straight. “ While COVID-19 cases in Florida have declined in recent weeks, the U.K. variant has spread rapidly in the state during that time. It now accounts for up to 15% of new cases in Florida”
So the UK variant is spreading rapidly even though cases are declining. Bottomline is cases are declining in Florida and this article is simply trying to incite fear.

  22. The Biden Administration wants Florida punished for being open. They want to destroy their economy. Florida’s leadership can sue the government for targeting them, and I am sure they will.

  23. Cases have declined but the new virus is highly contagious? Where is the logic??? Lmao they just hating on Florida for being so successful in vaccine distribution…oh and Tom Brady is their new enemy cause he didn’t wear a mask lol it was all his fault😂😂😂

  24. Yehe. We are coming to florida from Aruba. Just keep the doors open for us. This the 30th time that we come spending our vacation in florida. We love florida. Thanks.

  25. If everyone in Florida would listen and wear a mask, limit travel, and stay out of the damn clubs and bars, we’d be almost over this crap. Stop already, Florida!!!

  26. Bottom line, there is no right or wrong. Its what is best for you and your family. And people deserve the right to decide for themselves. If you have health issues, or are elderly,or are just plain scared, then YOU stay home. And that is OK. But it should not be mandated by an already ineffectual government. And I mean the former and current regimes.

  27. I live in Florida and I have been to every park since the pandemic, they do a really good job in keeping things clean and making you feel safe during this time. In my opinion the spread of the virus probably is mostly due to what people are doing outside of public places. There are rules in place when you are in public to slow the spread of the virus, but when people are with family and friends, and people from their inner circle they tend to be more comfortable and are not social distancing or wearing a mask. We should be more responsible and not rely on others to force responsibility on us. If everyone did their part outside of public places we can get back to normal a lot sooner. Everything doesn’t have to be political, it just keeps us decided and gets out focus off of what’s really important.

  28. Does a domestic travel ban mean we can go at all? Or just require a negative COVID test before going. Bachelorette party planned for April :(

  29. Why is Chinese virus a racist term, but UK, South Africa or Brazil virus strain is not? Or Spanish flu. Or Hong Kong virus… just asking for a friend.

  30. Great so when I have to give up everything, house care livelihood who will take care of me , NO ONE ☝️, wake up morons

  31. This was not an issue when during the super bowl. I have trip booked to see my son. I know my risks. If dumb ass football is not a problem then my travel plans should be either.

  32. I guess all these people saying they are coming down to FL to go to the parks don’t realize that we are in a pandemic . Must be nice not to have your job or family affected by the virus .

    Use your brain people !

  33. Tremendous overreach by the Federal Government. Solution: Fly into Alabama or Georgia, rent a car and drive. Problem solved.

  34. So let me get this straight… they are willing to ban travel to and from Floridia but not international travel? Way to go U.S. in protecting your people. If you stopped the international months ago we wouldn’t have this problem. Let’s try to model the example new Zealand has set

  35. I’m not 100% sure this isn’t designed to hurt the states that are up and running. We in Florida are enjoying a bit of prosperity and our “numbers” are no worse than states that are locked down. and, the recovery rate is nearly between 95 and 99% and our vaccination programs are running smoothly and getting better every day. As a matter of fact our regular flue season was almost non existent. As I said … they have to make the states that bungled this whole thing look better and get federal aid because they mismanaged their budgets.

  36. Oh yes restrict our domestic travel when Florida has had half as many cases as New York and we have a larger population than NY and Uncle Joe is opening the border to those bringing in WHATEVER!

  37. I just got back from vacationing in Orlando, it was pretty drastically different than the last time I was out there pre-pandemic. They are definitely taking a extra precautions which is nice to a degree, but it does take a toll on the overall Disney experience. We decided to skip the actual parks because we were told that although characters are in the park, they are behind a rope, children cannot get autographs nor give their favorite characters hugs and get photos. We also skipped out on the Character Breakfast because of the same reasons. Still had an amazing time as we always do, but it was a pretty big culture shock (I live in a small country town in Indiana) Security was extra tight, quite possibly because of Superbowl going on right in Tampa, I never have felt safer, but I also never felt so much like I was a criminal ( laughing but very serious) The beaches down by Dosoto State park were beautiful and pretty secluded from crowds but about an hour or so away. Hope this helps anyone with what to expect and hope y’all have great vacations :-)

  38. I hope That the White House Does it an act banned Domestic flight To Florida at all I had to Reschedule my flight already there is a lot invested in this I have been going through A lot medically This past year I have been told I can go if the White House goes through with the banned on flights to Florida I will be beyond I will be beyond

  39. I hope it does not happen I had to reschedule My flight 2 Florida already once This Make a lot of people mad And put A lot of businesses out of business I am hoping this doesn’t happen A lot of businesses out of business I am hoping this doesn’t happen I need this Vacation After a long year Of dealing with a lot of medical issues was cleared to go please don’t put a banned on flights to Florida please.

  40. This is pathetic. As soon as football is over (Money maker) they start this phony crap again!
Funny only on FL too right? Is this is “punish” the Governor? sick this is evil! whatever makes people happy and healthy they are stopping! WAKE up people! this is not about a virus you have a 99.8% chance of surviving!!

  41. Really? The white house (is that even a politically correct name?) is going to supersede state rights and restrict trade for a single state. Don’t see that happening and if it did I would imagine a huge class action suit would result, not to mention the constitutionality of such and edict. A number of state have worse covid numbers than Florida – Okay – they’re not a renegade “red” state. All I can say is WOW

  42. That’s stupid. Covid will continue to have strands just like the flu. The flu and covid have been around for many years. We can not kill our economy and live in fear forever.

  43. The only state in the country having fun and they want to stop that. Cone on down 80 degree in Daytona today

  44. Guess, no one noticed the Flu numbers are down, deaths for heart attacks, and all others. Because hospital get paid extra money by the government for each covid death.

  45. Can’t imagine Florida won’t fight back against this. Sounds like political payback because DeSantis speaks against the current occupants of the WH.

  46. Omg we are planning on going in june,we have our, house, airfare, and disney tickets already, we were going to go last year but rebooked for this year,i hope it doesnt happen.

  47. If you can travel to be on campus for college or you could keep the superbowl with a live audience of 25,000 people, then I think people should be allowed to travel to go to Disney if they want too…

  48. Do u have any family that have died from it? Have you been serioisly ill from it? When you do we can then discuss your feelings of how its no big deal. Maybe you feel they were just going to die anyway. Go on vacation, don’t wear a mask, come home and give it to family and watch them die. See how you feel afterwards. So if that 1% includes a parent, a child, or a best friend its ok? Well maybe it is ok with you people as long as it doesn’t affect your plans.

  49. its quite scary how so many people think this pandemic is a hoax or think that they are invincible. Why can’t we be like new zealand? only then will we be able to truly appreciate the magic of disney in all of its glory

  50. Tom, I would like your opinion about going to Disney World during spring break time this year. I have avoided all places Disney during spring break for years but this year we are considering it. With the decreased capacity numbers and many people still not choosing to travel do you think we could take a trip to WDW at the end of March and get to ride more than one ride per day?

  51. Sorry y’all, Florida needs to close .. too many ppl are causing lots of problems..
