REVIEW: New Shrimp Fritters Don’t Live Up to Classic Conch Fritters at Disney’s Old Key West Resort

Disney announced yesterday that Old Key West Resort would be replacing their classic conch fritters with shrimp fritters, in an effort to help support sustainable seafood initiatives. We visited Gurgling Suitcase Libations & Spirits today to try the new shrimp fritters.

The fritters will also be served at Olivia’s Cafe.

Despite their appearance, these aren’t crispy. Instead, they’re slightly chewy.

It has pieces of shrimp, chives, and breading. The inside looked slightly underdone.

The shrimp isn’t fishy, and there’s a decent amount in there.

It comes with honey mustard, which is nice and sweet but overpowers the fritters.

They aren’t bad, but we wouldn’t reach for them again.

  1. If you’ve ever visited the Keys, conch fritters are in every bar and restaurant. It was so cool to also have them at the Old Key West resort, such an authentic touch to a resort that already did such a nice job echoing the Keys.

But why be authentic when you can be cheap?? That’s the new theme of Disney. (Get out of here with “sustainability” shrimp is cheaper.)

I can’t wait for the key lime tart to be replaced with lemon pudding.

  2. The conch fritters are part of the “Key West” theme. The shrimp version just seems like another effort to cut corners. We like to go there and enjoy conch fritters and a cocktail. This is disappointing.

  3. We were sorely disappointed when we ordered the conch chowder at Goods To Go and were told it was no longer made. We were offered chicken noodle soup! Didn’t get the Old Key West vibe eating that on an 85 degree day!
