New Play! Pavilion Permit Gives Hint at Possible Opening Timeframe at EPCOT

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a permit for the long-delayed Play! Pavilion at EPCOT. This new pavilion will take over what was once the Wonders of Life Pavilion. It was announced in 2019 and originally supposed to open for the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World, but we haven’t heard much about it since COVID-19 hit.

The permit description is simply “General Contractor package.” Balfour Beatty Construction is named as the contractor. The expiration date of the permit is December 31, 2024. This could mean the Play! Pavilion won’t open until 2025, but it’s also likely Disney is just buying as much time as possible. Play! could open sooner than that.

The Play! Pavilion received an entirely new roof in early 2021, but any other construction has been out of view.

Here is how Imagineer Zach Riddley originally described the Play! Pavilion:

“This innovative, new pavilion is beyond anything we’ve ever created and is completely unique to Epcot. Built on the power of play, it introduces an immersive and interactive ‘city’ where you can explore, create, and interact with some of your favorite Disney characters. This is an experience worthy of our bold vision for Epcot – and another signature element of our transformation.”
