Universal Beijing Resort Forced to Close Indefinitely for the Second Time Amid Zero-COVID Policy in China

China’s unwavering and strict zero-COVID policy has forced Universal Beijing Resort to indefinitely close its gates once again as cases continue appearing in the nation’s capital.

The following notice was posted on the Universal Beijing Resort website:

“To comply with pandemic prevention and control, Universal Studios Beijing, Universal CityWalk Beijing, The Universal Studios Grand Hotel, and NUO Resort Hotel will be temporarily closed from  Oct.26th 2022. We will continue to assess the impact on operations and try our best to resume operations as soon as possible.”

A reopening date was not given. This is the second time Universal Beijing Resort has closed due to COVID-19 this year, with its first closure from May 1 through June 15 as the Omicron variants continued to spread through China.

Beijing’s “dynamic zero-COVID” policy implements strict city-wide lockdowns, mass testing, contact tracing, travel restrictions, and constant mandatory masking and physical distancing policies. Chinese state media outlet CGTN claims the policy “aims to realize zero infection and bring the pandemic under control at the minimum social cost and in the shortest time possible. It protects people’s health and ensures they can lead normal lives by keeping the virus at bay.”

The city marked 20 new COVID cases on Tuesday, with several areas of the city on lockdown to prevent further case spread. Guests who visit Universal Studios Beijing are required to show a negative COVID test within 72 hours as well as a valid photo ID and green “health kit” QR code for contact tracing.

Universal Studios Beijing first opened last year after facing delays due to the pandemic. The park claims more than 13.8 million guests visited in its first year in spite of COVID restrictions.

  1. CCP control can never be condoned. The money companies like Universal and Disney are losing who have theme parks there must be astronomical. How shameful.
