Construction Walls Removed From Grizzly Peak Airfield Plane in Disney California Adventure

The Grizzly Peak Airfield plane is once again on display at Disney California Adventure. With construction walls down, this historic aircraft shines in new ways, radiating fresh intrigue into this piece of opening day history.

The airplane has been a feature of Disney California Adventure since the park opened in 2001. Originally standing where Condor Flats and Grizzly Peak meet, the plane was silver and red and themed as a Condor Flats Air Tour company. Its purpose was originally meant to immerse park guests into the desert airfield theming of the Condor Flats area. Originally a sub-area of opening day’s Golden State district, the Condor Flats section was themed as a desert airfield and testing facility celebrating California’s aeronautic history.

The “Golden State” district was retired and its three sections were broken off into their own separate lands in 2012, as part of the park’s redesign. The Condor Flats section was subsequently incorporated into the Grizzly Peak area, as Grizzly Peak Airfield, in 2015.

Existing structures were re-skinned to fit into the new setting. The airplane and hangars survived, but not before a major rebranding of the area’s famous plane. When the construction walls fell at the completion of an extensive 2015 renovation, the plane reemerged as a Grizzly Park Service aircraft.  In keeping with a National Park-inspired theme, the plane was now a tan color with red accents and featured a logo for the fictional Grizzly Peak Park Service on the tail.

The plane sits near a Monorail track and underneath a Grizzly Peak billboard, which was also rethemed at the dissolution of Condor Flats. The complementary billboard features a fly fisherman in the flowing waters at the base of Grizzly Peak. The billboard’s text reads “Grizzly Peak”, “Land of Scenic Wonders”, and “Yours to Enjoy.”

After spending some time behind construction walls, the rehabbed plane has emerged once again. During the day, the plane looks much the same as it did when its retheme was revealed in 2015. At night, however, a bright light display illuminates from the cockpit of the airplane, radiating new intrigue into this piece of opening day history.

  1. This area at Grizzly Peak Airfield is where Walt’s Grumman Gulfstream should be displayed. I’m sure it would take some doing but she belongs on Disneyland property. To be viewed, photographed and enjoyed by millions.
