By the middle of next week, “Avatar: The Way of Water” is expected to surpass “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “The Avengers” at the domestic box office and become the 10th highest-grossing movie in the U.S.A. and Canada with $623.3 million, Deadline reports.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” is expected to gross another $14-$16 million for a seventh straight weekend at number one. Right now, it has about a $604.8 million domestic box office.
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” had a domestic box office of $620.1 million, while “The Avengers” had $623.3 million.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” made $1 billion in less than two weeks and has since hit $2.074 billion globally, making it the 4th highest-grossing release of all time, knocking “The Force Awakens” down to 5th place. James Cameron has directed three out of the top four films. Here’s what the top five list looks like right now:
- “Avatar” – $2.9 billion
- “Avengers: Endgame” – $2.799 billion
- “Titanic” – $2.19 billion
- “Avatar: The Way of Water” – $2.074 billion
- “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” – $2.07 billion

As previously announced, Sigourney Weaver makes her return, but this time as teenager Kiri. Her original character, Dr. Grace Augustine, died in “Avatar.” The film earned four nominations at this year’s Academy Awards. “Avatar 3,” which will feature “evil” fire Na’vi, was filmed at the same time as “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
