Future of Star Wars

At Star Wars Celebration Europe, Lucasfilm announced three new standalone “Star Wars” films and the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey. And Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct the Rey-centered sequel, which will take place 15 years after “The Rise of Skywalker.” Rey will be leading a “new Jedi Order.”

James Mangold will direct a pre-Old Republic film about the origins of the Force and Dave Filoni will direct a film taking place between “The Mandalorian” and “The Force Awakens.”

Taika Waititi is also set to direct a “Star Wars” film, but no plot details are available yet.

Rian Johnson, who directed “The Last Jedi,” is also supposed to have a “Star Wars” trilogy in the works, but the director has been busy. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy recently said, “Rian and I talk all the time. He just keeps getting more and more successful, and it keeps moving things back further and further. One day we’ll figure this out.”

In 2020, Lucasfilm announced the “Star Wars: Lando” series and the “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” film.

Donald Glover is set to reprise his role as a young Lando Calrissian, who he previously portrayed in “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” Glover recently said of the project, “We’re talking about it. That’s as much as I can say without Kathleen Kennedy hunting me down.”

“Rogue Squadron” was to be directed by Patty Jenkins and originally slated for a Christmas 2023 release. It was delayed and then removed from Disney’s release schedule entirely. Jenkins said in December that she was still developing “Rogue Squadron,” but sources with knowledge of the production said it is no longer in active development at Lucasfilm.

Upcoming “Star Wars” series include “Ahsoka” starring Rosario Dawson as the titular Ahsoka Tano, who first appeared in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and then made her live-action debut in “The Mandalorian.” “Ahsoka” will pick up on where Ahsoka’s story left off after the events of “The Mandalorian” and the “Star Wars: Rebels” series finale. It will premiere on August 23.

“The Acolyte” will take place during the High Republic era of the galaxy far, far away. The series stars Amandla Stenberg as the titular acolyte and Lee Jung-jae as a Jedi master. It will premiere on Disney+ in 2024.

Also in the works is “Skeleton Crew” starring Jude Law, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, and Kerry Condon.

“Andor” season 2 starring Gabriel Luna is also expected to premiere next year.
