Guillermo del Toro was going to direct a “Star Wars” film written by David S. Goyer, but the film never came to fruition, the pair recently confirmed.

Goyer mentioned the script on an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz. He didn’t share details about what the film with del Toro would have been, but del Toro posted a follow-up on X with a hint: the letters “J” and “BB.”

True. Can’t say much. Maybe two letters “J” and “BB” is that three letters?

Fans have speculated the unmade film could have involved Jabba the Hutt and/or BB-8. J could also refer to Jango Fett, Jannah, and many other characters, or maybe a planet like Jakku or Jedha. Del Toro added that this film was in development “MANY, MANY moons ago… about 6 years or so…” while Goyer said it was about four years ago.

Goyer said the “Star Wars” film didn’t get made because there was “a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time.” He added that it was a “cool script” and there was “a lot of cool artwork” produced for it.

Del Toro, known for his fairytale and horror films like “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Shape of Water,” was also once attached to direct a new “Haunted Mansion” film over a decade before the recent one was released. Del Toro’s version didn’t work out and the final product was written by Katie Dippold and directed by Justin Simien.

Goyer is best known for writing superhero films like “The Dark Knight” trilogy and the “Blade” trilogy. Del Toro actually directed “Blade II,” while Goyer directed “Blade: Trinity.” He said he also worked on a second unproduced “Star Wars” film. He created a “scriptment” (somewhere between a script and a treatment) for an “Origins of the Jedi” film set 25,000 years before “A New Hope.”

While that exact film may not be happening, James Mangold (“Logan,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”) is directing a film set before the Old Republic about the origins of the Force.

When it comes to other upcoming “Star Wars” flicks, Dave Filoni is set to direct a film that takes place between “The Mandalorian” and “The Force Awakens,” while Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct a sequel taking place 15 years after “The Rise of Skywalker.” “Star Wars” has seen success with recent live-action shows on Disney+ including “The Mandalorian,” “Andor,” and the currently airing “Ahsoka.”

We recently learned the Lando Calrissian series co-written by and starring Donald Glover will be a movie. Taika Waititi and Rian Johnson are also still working on “Star Wars” films.

The last “Star Wars” film was “Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker,” released in December 2019.
