‘Loki’ Creator & ‘Multiverse of Madness’ Writer Michael Waldron to Write ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’

Michael Waldron will replace Jeff Loveness as the writer of Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” Deadline exclusively reports. Waldron was already tapped to write “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which will follow “Kang Dynasty.”

Waldron has significant connections to Marvel’s ongoing Multiverse Saga. He created and served as showrunner of the first season of “Loki” and wrote “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Both properties dealt with the multiverse more than most other recent Marvel projects, and “Loki” featured variants of main villain Kang the Conquerer.

Destin Daniel Cretton was originally set to direct “Kang Dynasty,” but recently exited the project to focus on the Marvel TV series “Wonder Man.” Cretton directed “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and is set to return for a sequel. A new director for “Kang Dynasty” has not been announced.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is producing “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” which is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026. “Avengers: Secret Wars” will follow on May 7, 2027. Both release dates were shifted by a year due to this summer’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” writer Jeff Loveness was previously attached to write “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” The “Ant-Man” threequel kicked off phase five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and featured Kang the Conquerer as the villain, so it made sense that Loveness was to write “Kang Dynasty,” too. But it also makes sense for Waldron to write both upcoming “Avengers” films.

That said, Kang’s future appearances in the MCU are potentially in flux. Marvel Studios has reportedly considered phasing Kang the Conquerer out and replacing him with someone like Doctor Doom as the actor behind Kang and his variants, Jonathan Majors, faces domestic violence allegations.

Doctor Doom is most known as a villain of the Fantastic Four. Phase six of the MCU will begin with a new “Fantastic Four” film in 2025. Pedro Pascal is rumored to star as Reed Richards / Mr. Fantastic. “Fantastic Four” will be followed by “Thunderbolts” and “Blade” before the two “Avengers” films.

Marvel has not made any official announcements regarding the future of Majors and Kang in the MCU. “Loki” season 2 premiered after charges were brought against Majors, but filming was already completed and Majors remained in the season as Victor Timely and He Who Remains. Majors’ trial is set to begin on November 29.
