The Melbourne, Florida office of the National Weather Service is advising those in Central Florida to prepare for the risk of severe weather on Thursday, April 11, 2024.
Risk of Severe Weather in Central Florida
Per a post from NWS Melbourne on X (formerly Twitter), Central Florida can expect a slight risk of severe weather in the early afternoon to evening, with the highest risk along and North of I-4.
Potential hazards include gusty winds from 50-60 miles per hour, frequent lightning, and small hail. Per their alert, a brief tornado “cannot be ruled out.” There is also a 15 percent chance for wind gusts greater than 60 miles per hour.
This weather could potentially affect theme park operations at Universal Orlando Resort and Walt Disney World, as both are to the south of central Orlando and off of I-4.
At Walt Disney World Resort, umbrellas have been closed with zip-ties, likely in preparation for storms later this afternoon and evening. Severe weather can cause attractions to temporarily shut down, and live entertainment can be canceled for the day.
