REVIEW: The Captain’s Gala Dinner at 1923 on the Disney Treasure

Katie Francis

Updated on:

A stunning collage of five gourmet dishes from the Captain's Gala Dinner: a fresh salad, chocolate-topped sundae, baked oysters, chicken with sauce, and a layered cake slice reminiscent of 1923 elegance on Disney Treasure.

One of the rotational venues that guests visit more than once on the Disney Treasure is 1923. Since its counterpart on the Disney Wish has only one night on the slate, the second night on the Treasure features a new menu for “The Captain’s Gala Dinner.”

The room exudes elegance with wood-paneled walls and a sign reading "1923 Walt Disney," reminiscent of the enchanting era featured in a Captain's Gala Dinner aboard the Disney Treasure. A reception desk stands beneath an ornate lighting fixture, casting a warm glow over the space.

1923 Interior

A table setting fit for a Captain's Gala Dinner features a decorative plate marked "1923," complemented by a neatly arranged napkin, wine glasses, and cutlery on a crisp white tablecloth.

1923 is located midship on Deck 3. It gets its name from the year that The Walt Disney Company was officially started. The space is meant to evoke golden age Hollywood dining, such as Musso & Frank or a visit to the Frolic Room. Some guests might be reminded of The Hollywood Brown Derby at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, or Carthay Circle at Disney California Adventure.

The entrance to the restaurant "1923" features a cozy stroller waiting inside. Above the door, a sign elegantly reads "Walt Disney," evoking the charm of a Disney Treasure.

There are two dining rooms, one named for Walt Disney and the other for his brother Roy Disney.

A wall display showcases framed sketches and a vintage 1923 poster of Mickey Mouse, complemented by photographs reminiscent of a Disney treasure, creating an elegant backdrop perfect for a Captain's Gala Dinner.

While the style is intended to represent Hollywood’s golden age, there is no shortage of modern representation throughout the restaurant’s Art Deco interior.

Throughout the venue, you’ll find sketches, concept art, maquettes and more from the Disney and Pixar animated films “Up,” “Mulan,” “Pocahontas,” and “Finding Nemo.”

Bread Service Reviews

A basket with a beige cloth holds four assorted bread rolls, reminiscent of the elegance you'd find at a Captain's Gala Dinner aboard the Disney Treasure. The selection includes two round rolls, one oval, and one uniquely triangular, bringing a touch of 1923 sophistication to every meal.

It has a hard crunchy exterior and a soft interior. The accompaniment is a nice touch. It’s appreciated that their specialty bread is actually different based on the night.

Appetizer Reviews

Double-baked Three Cheese Soufflé

Roquefort, Gruyere, Goats Cheese, and Baby Leaf Spinach

A round serving of green vegetable-infused custard in a creamy white sauce sits elegantly on a white plate with a brown rim, reminiscent of the sophisticated dishes at the Captain's Gala Dinner aboard the Disney Treasure.

We’ve never had cheese this texture. It’s weird, even for a soufflé. There’s just so much cheese. It’s spongy and soft. The flavor, for having three cheeses, is one-note.

Sliced Prosciutto, Coppa, and Soppressata

Modena Balsamic Grape Tomatoes, Rosemary Sea Salt Crisp, and Parmesan Reggiano

A plate with assorted cured meats, a breadstick, and two roasted cherry tomatoes awaits at the Captain's Gala Dinner aboard the Disney Treasure.

If you went to a decent buffet, and they had these as a cheese and meat spread, it’d suffice. It won’t disappoint if this is what you’re in the mood for.

Rating out of 7: 4

Potato Gnocchi (Allergy Menu Item)

Roasted Forest Mushrooms and Pea Puree

A plate of gnocchi with green sauce, topped with mushrooms and peas, reminiscent of the elegant dishes served at the Captain's Gala Dinner aboard the Disney Treasure, rests on a white tablecloth.

It usually comes with Pancetta, but this dish was for a vegan, so we opted out. This is seriously under-seasoned. There’s nothing happening here. It’s not bad or good, it simply exists. We’ve never had flavorless mushrooms before, but the Disney Cruise Line has pulled it off.

Rating out of 7: 3

Baked Oysters

Spinach, Shallots, Pancetta, and Crisp Japanese Breadcrumbs

At the Captain's Gala Dinner aboard the Disney Treasure, three baked oysters with breadcrumbs arrive on your plate, perfectly garnished with a lemon wedge, reminiscent of classic 1923 restaurant elegance.

These are the same quality as frozen supermarket oysters. The breadcrumbs seem to have been just poured on after instead of cooked with it. It’s too fishy. This is gross.

Salad Reviews

Baby Iceberg Salad

Red and Yellow Cherry Tomatoes, Scallions, Crisp Spiced Chickpeas, and Sumac-Tahini Ranch Dressing

A plate of Captain's Gala Dinner salad with iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and chickpeas in a creamy dressing, garnished with chopped chives and a single chive blade on top.

This is basic but good. The spicy chickpeas add a little extra flavor to a simple salad. The dressing is a little mild, though. It could use a little more tang.

Belgian Endive, Radicchio, and Escarole Lettuce

Brie Cheese, Valencia Orange, Candied Walnuts, and Aged Jerez Viniagrette

This delightful salad, reminiscent of a Captain's Gala Dinner, features mixed greens, radicchio, orange slices, and walnuts. Each bite is enhanced by a creamy dressing and elegantly presented on a white plate with a brown rim.

This was very good. The candied walnuts are sweet and the dressing is fantastic. Everything was fresh and delicious.

From the Kettle Reviews

Red Lentil and Carrot Soup

Thyme

A bowl of brown soup with visible pieces of vegetables sits elegantly on a saucer, reminiscent of a Captain's Gala Dinner, evoking the timeless charm of 1923 aboard the Disney Treasure.

This is not a regular menu offering and it usually includes smoked bacon, but this dish was for a vegan and we ordered it without. It has a chalky, grainy texture but in an appropriate way for lentils. It’s a little more spice than the usual dishes and we enjoyed it.

Braised Oxtail Soup

Roasted Sweet Carrots, Celery, Picked Thyme, and Porcini Tortellini

At the Captain's Gala Dinner, indulge in a rich brown soup served in a ceramic bowl on a saucer, adorned with herbs and ingredients, reminiscent of the elegant Disney Treasure journeys of 1923.

This was as good as it looked and smelled. The porcini tortellini had perfect crisp edges and the rest was nice and soft. The meat is tender.

Entrée Reviews

Oven-baked Lobster Tail

Sun-dried Tomato Lemon-Pesto Mash, Roasted Asparagus, and Drawn Butter

The lobster is perfectly cooked and not fishy. The mash is lacking but the lobster is worth it.

Rating out of 7: 6

Roasted Green Circle Chicken Breast

Tagliatelle, Grappa, Morel Mushrooms, Tarragon Cream, Green Asparagus, and Parmesan Reggiano

At Disney Treasure's Captain's Gala Dinner, enjoy a plate of pasta with creamy mushroom sauce, topped with seared fish and garnished with asparagus, reminiscent of the elegant offerings at 1923.

The tender, juicy chicken is well-seasoned. You get a nice thick piece of it, too. The morel mushrooms are very forward with the pasta and it works really well.

Rating out of 7: 7

Ratatouille Feuilletée

Pan-roasted Eggplant, Zucchini, Bell Pepper, Pistou, and Basil Provençale

At the Disney Treasure's Captain's Gala Dinner, a skewer of tofu and vegetables rests elegantly on a bed of chickpeas in tomato sauce, served on a decorative plate reminiscent of 1923-style charm.

We ordered this vegan and we’re not sure what they removed, but they replaced something with tofu. It has moments where it tastes like traditional ratatouille. It’s just a collection of vegetables. The chickpeas were great.

Rating out of 7: 4

Seared Pork Tenderloin Medallions

Asiago Cheese-Sage Polenta, Rainbow Chard, Pancetta, and Hard Cider Reduction

A plate of meat medallions on a bed of creamy polenta, garnished with green herbs and drizzled with sauce, evokes the elegance of the Captain's Gala Dinner aboard the Disney Treasure, reminiscent of a 1923 dining experience set on a beautifully patterned dish.

The hard cider reduction is good. The pork was a little gray and needed more seasoning. It was also very chewy.

  • Old Fashioned Apple Pie
  • Raspberry Vanilla Crème Brûlée
  • Californian Grapefruit Cake
  • Chocolate Lava Cake
  • No Sugar Added Chocolate Cheesecake
  • The Captain’s Table Sundae

Dessert Reviews

Old Fashioned Apple Pie

Braised Cinnamon Apples and Vanilla Ice Cream

At the Captain's Gala Dinner aboard the Disney Treasure, indulge in a slice of apple pie topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with caramel sauce, evoking the classic elegance of 1923.

The fresh apples and cinnamon are fantastic. The crust has a weird texture, more akin to a thin sponge cake than a pie.

Rating out of 7: 5

Californian Grapefruit Cake

Vanilla Butter Cake, Grapefruit Glaze, Cream Cheese Mousse

A slice of layered cake, reminiscent of the elegance served at Disney Treasure's Captain's Gala Dinner, features a delightful fruit topping on a white plate, garnished with whipped cream and a chocolate stick.

This is a solid cake but the grapefruit is understated. The cake is nice and moist but it lacks the punch we expect from this dish.

Rating out of 7: 5

Chocolate Lava Cake

Double Chocolate Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream

At the Captain's Gala Dinner aboard the Disney Treasure, indulge in a chocolate lava cake with melted chocolate sauce, elegantly served on a white plate and perfectly paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

It’s not the best lava cake we’ve ever had, but it’s pretty good. It has a strange aftertaste, though.

Rating out of 7: 5

The Captain’s Table Sundae

Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream, Chocolate Sauce, Whipped Cream, and Crunchy Dry Meringue

At the Captain's Gala Dinner, a dessert table dazzles with delights like a chocolate and mint ice cream sundae, a slice of sponge cake with cream, and a slice of pie topped with ice cream, reminiscent of the opulent offerings aboard the Disney Treasure.

This is great. It’s simple and basic but a classic.

Rating out of 7: 7

Vegan Raspberry Sorbet

A glass dish with a scoop of sorbet elegantly sits on a decorative plate, reminiscent of the refined desserts served at Disney Treasure's Captain's Gala Dinner. A hand is subtly visible in the background, adding a touch of anticipation to this 1923-themed dining experience.

This tastes like real raspberry instead of an artificial flavor. It’s simple but tasty. It’s a great lighter option.

Rating out of 7: 7

Raspberry Mousse Dome

Raspberry Coulis and Salsa Fruits

A glossy red dessert, reminiscent of the opulence found at a Captain's Gala Dinner on the Disney Treasure, is topped with gold leaf and surrounded by sliced strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries.

It doesn’t taste terribly artificial either. It’s very tart, rich, and creamy.
