The movie was mired in controversy from its stars, Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. Zegler is an outspoken supporter of Palestine, while Gadot is Israeli and supports the Israeli government. There were calls to boycott the film from supporters on both sides.

When Zegler posted “free palestine” in a thread on X about “Snow White,” producer Marc Platt reportedly flew to New York to beg her to remove the post, and she refused.

Platt’s son, Jonah, blamed Zegler for the film’s poor box office performance. It fell short of its projected box office and ultimately made a total of $205.5 million — $87.2 million in the U.S. and Canada, and $118.3 million internationally.

Many also disliked Zegler’s casting because of her Colombian heritage, and she faced backlash for criticizing the original animated “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”

Prince lifts Snow White joyfully as Disney Characters, dwarfs, and forest animals celebrate in a colorful animated forest.

The film also faced criticism regarding its inclusion of the Seven Dwarfs. Actor Peter Dinklage criticized the characters, after which Disney seemed to flip-flop regarding how they would be included, initially saying they would take a “different approach,” then seemingly replacing them with a group of magical characters, before deciding to include them via CGI. Fans were also displeased when Prince Charming was replaced with a different male character.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 40% critic score and 71% audience score. “Snow White” reportedly produced 62% more carbon emissions than average.

Amid the film’s poor results, Disney put their live-action “Tangled” remake on pause.
