Avatar director James Cameron has officially reached billionaire status. Though most became billionaires with the help of other revenue streams, Cameron has done so almost entirely with his blockbuster movies.

Forbes estimates Cameron’s personal net worth is about $1.1 billion. He joins fellow filmmakers George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, and Tyler Perry (Spielberg tops the list with an estimated $7.1 billion).

Cameron’s Titanic (1997) was the highest-grossing film of all time with an original worldwide gross of $1.84 billion. It was the first film to ever make $1 billion. Thanks to re-releases, it has now grossed $2.264 billion.

Titanic held the top spot until Cameron’s Avatar (2009), which became the first film to ever make $2 billion. The second film to pass that benchmark? Titanic, again, when it was re-released. Though Avengers: Endgame (2019) briefly overtook Avatar as the highest-grossing film of all time, Cameron’s film reclaimed its status with a 2021 re-release in China. Its worldwide box office to date is $2.923 billion.

Cameron’s other successful films and franchises include The Terminator, Aliens, and True Lies. Collectively, Cameron’s films have earned almost $9 billion.

Avatar: Fire and Ash, in theaters this weekend, is expected to add another $2 billion to that total. And Cameron will make at least $200 million from the film.

Among his countless awards and nominations, Cameron earned Best Director at the 1998 Academy Awards for Titanic, which also won Best Picture and Best Film Editing. Avatar was nominated in the same three categories in 2010, although did not win. Avatar: Way of Water was nominated for Best Picture in 2023.

He also won Best Director at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and the Golden Globe Awards for Titanic. The film received the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama. Avatar also won him Best Director and Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes.

He was named a Disney Legend in 2024.
