How Timeline Shift Will Forever Change Oga’s Cantina in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland will soon incorporate multiple Star Wars eras, and the timeline shift specifically in Black Spire Outpost comes with a change to the Oga’s Cantina backstory.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Timeline

Oga's Cantina bar in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland

Since opening in 2019, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has been set between Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi and Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker — in 34 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin). Although they’ve sometimes broken this timeframe with limited character appearances, Disneyland is going all-in with various updates to the land on April 29, 2026 (the changes are exclusive to Disneyland and won’t be implemented at Walt Disney World). Their announcement included this note about Oga’s Cantina:

In the era of the Galactic Civil War, proprietor Oga Garra only recently opened this watering hole, which is already becoming a popular spot for intergalactic travelers.

The sentence gives new context to the bar’s backstory and potentially contradicts existing information. Here’s what we already knew about the cantina…

Oga’s Cantina Backstory

Oga Garra, a local Blutopian crime boss. The Star Wars Databank describes her as "elusive" and says few have seen her and "lived to tell the tale."

Oga’s Cantina is named after Oga Garra, a local Blutopian crime boss. The Star Wars Databank describes her as “elusive” and says few have seen her and “lived to tell the tale.”

The 2020 reference book Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: Traveler’s Guide to Batuu states Oga is 82 years old, making her birth year 48 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin). She was an orphan raised by the Hutts and, in the last decade, became the most powerful figure at Black Spire Outpost. “From docking permits to farm imports, she gets a cut of everything,” the book states.

“She has earned an infamous, almost mythical reputation among smugglers, criminals, and prominent figures of the underworld,” the Databank adds. “Even the mere mention of her name sets the locals on edge. Many local Batuuans wonder whether she’ll finally make an appearance now that the First Order has arrived on Black Spire Outpost, but she remains hidden, preferring to run her cantina and the outpost in the shadows.”

Traveler’s Guide to Batuu also says the cantina was remodeled about twenty years ago, “recent” by Outpost standards. That would be around 14 ABY. Still, some hints of the past remain like blaster marks on the wall. “Locals say those ended up there before Oga took over,” during a fight between off-worlders called the Darshi and Grand Admiral Thrawn. “These little reminders are proof that the cantina was a rough place long before Oga got here.”

Darth Vader himself has been to Oga's. The Traveler's Guide says there are rumors he "passed through this door more than forty years ago."

Another interesting tidbit is that Darth Vader himself has been to Oga’s. The Traveler’s Guide says there are rumors he “passed through this door more than forty years ago.” This is confirmed by the Thrawn: Alliances novel and comics. Vader actually visited twice, as Anakin Skywalker in 19 BBY and again as Vader in 2 BBY (36 years before Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is set). Both times were with Thrawn and led to the fights that left those blaster marks.

Side note — Darth Vader will now roam and interact with guests in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge as part of the timeline changes.

The Oga's Cantina entry of the Databank describes it as a "notorious local watering hole in Black Spire Outpost known for its shady clientele of bounty hunters, smugglers, and off-worlders sampling unique concoctions, conducting shady business, and encountering friends and foes.

The Oga’s Cantina entry of the Databank describes it as a “notorious local watering hole in Black Spire Outpost known for its shady clientele of bounty hunters, smugglers, and off-worlders sampling unique concoctions, conducting shady business, and encountering friends and foes.” It has a “strict code of conduct that tries to keep its unruly patrons in check. With a history of being a smugglers’ safe haven and a popular stopping point for those seeking to avoid the authorities, Oga’s Cantina has a story or two to tell.”

Former Star Tours pilot RX-24 crash-landed on Batuu and was “recently reprogrammed” (according to the Databank) by Mubo of Droid Depot to be a DJ in Oga’s. He’s now known as DJ R-3X a.k.a. “Rex.”

Oga’s Cantina Changes

Oga herself "only recently opened" the cantina during the Galactic Civil War

So how does that one sentence affect the pre-existing story of Oga’s Cantina? Well, it states Oga herself “only recently opened” the cantina during the Galactic Civil War. This is despite the bar having already existed when Anakin and Thrawn visited “before Oga took over”. Their first visit was even before the Galactic Civil War.

The Galactic Civil War is the main event of the original Star Wars trilogy, lasting from 4 BBY to 5 ABY (9 years). The second Thrawn: Alliances visit was in 2 BBY and Oga supposedly wasn’t involved. So that suggests it became Oga’s bar sometime between 2 BBY and 5 ABY. That works fine with her age — she would have been between 46 and 53 years old.

The sentence also states Oga’s Cantina is “already becoming a popular spot for intergalactic travelers,” suggesting it wasn’t popular for travelers before Oga’s time, which might be true. Though Vader and Thrawn were travelers, the bar might have mostly catered to locals before Oga arrived.

The discrepancy between Oga opening the bar versus taking over the bar could be explained by the bar shutting down for a period between Vader’s visit and Oga’s arrival. Or maybe Oga likes to say she “opened” it and ignores any former bosses.

More likely, Disney just decided it didn’t matter to guests. After all, when multiple time periods exist at the same time in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, it won’t matter much if some events don’t line up properly.

The changes also mean, however, that the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland and the version in Walt Disney World will have different stories.

The Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge updates also include some aesthetic changes and the addition of John Williams’ film scores to the land’s background music. The “Cantina Band” song, originally performed by Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes at Chalmun’s Spaceport Cantina (as seen in Star Wars: A New Hope) will be added near Oga’s Cantina.
