Mega Marvel E-Ticket Ride Was Killed Because Disney Executives Didn’t Trust Imagineering

In a new report by the Wall Street Journal, Disney Imagineers share stories from the tumultuous past several years inside the company, including the truth behind the cancellation of a major Marvel e-ticket attraction set for Disney California Adventure.

Marvel E-Ticket Ride Killed

Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure opened on June 4, 2021, after being delayed from its original slated date of July 18, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon opening, the land featured only one new major attraction, WEB SLINGERS. (Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! replaced Tower of Terror in 2017, prior to the land’s opening.)

However, a second major e-ticket attraction was planned for phase two of the land. The attraction would take guests onboard a Quinjet to fly alongside the Avengers in an epic adventure to Wakanda and beyond. Guests would have teamed up alongside the Avengers in a battle to save the world against one of the most powerful villains they have ever faced.

In 2022, prior to his firing, Bob Chapek announced that the Avengers Campus Quinjet attraction slated for Disney California Adventure was on hold until Disney had more funds for the project.

A recent article from the Wall Street Journal sheds some light on the delayed and later cancelled project. With Chapek at the helm, “it was a time of diminished ambition, because senior parks executives didn’t trust Walt Disney Imagineering could deliver projects on time and on budget.” According to sources close to the projects, several major Marvel attractions were canceled during this time, likely including the original e-ticket attraction at Disney California Adventure.

Later, a different e-ticket attraction was announced to take the place of the cancelled Quinjet experience. With this announcement and more Avengers Campus updates, the land could include characters “from anywhere” in the multiverse. The new attraction was set to feature a “brand-new story that would bring guests into battle alongside their favorite Super Heroes.”

Confirmed at the 2024 D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the updated expansion to Avengers Campus will nearly double the size of the land at California Adventure and add two new rides alongside Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission BREAKOUT! and WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure.

A group of people, including families with children, walk towards the entrance of "Avengers: Infinity Defense" attraction in a sunny, futuristic Avengers Campus setting with vibrant lighting and greenery.

Avengers: Infinity Defense is expected to be a 3D attraction using the same system as Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure at Tokyo DisneySea. Guests will join Marvel superheroes as they jump across the multiverse, battling King Thanos, an alternate version of the villain who won.

The second new ride will be Stark Flight Lab with Robert Downey, Jr. returning as Tony Stark / Iron Man. Guests will board “gyro-kinetic pods” that are lifted into the air by robotic KUKA arms for “flight tests.”

There is currently no opening timeline for the expanded land; however, we could get more details at this year’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, taking place from August 14-16, 2026 in Anaheim, California.
